I shot this clip with a Canon sd800is STILL CAMERA!
It's not made to replace a camcorder, but to shoot still images.

(Viemo seems to drop a bunch of frames and in reality this movie is quite smooth)

I post this video to show you that you can have fairly decent video with a digital camera that cost less than $300 (USD)

The clip was shot at 800X480 at 30fps and the camera 'spit out' an AVI file. (compression #1)

Then I took that loaded in to VirtualDub and gave it a bit 'sharpening' to delete some non usable pixels. Written out as an AVI file (compression #2)

Then I took the file and loaded into Windows Media Encoder ( a free program from MS) and made it a HD video. (compression #3) Not deinterlaced... maybe next time I'll do it that way.

Then I uploaded here and this is what you see.
(compression #4)

So, it went through 4 different compression and if the image is still usable, then this little Canon is one hell of a camera.

BTW, in the original mode 800X480 is nearly good as some of those $600 Sanyo ini-mini camcorders :)
Am not saying that this is a replacement for camcorders, but the camera slips righ into your shirt pocket!
I am able to record on a 4Gb SD-card around 60 minutes give or take some :) Check it out online.

BTW, you can take even a cheaper Canon-Elph camera line and use it for movie.... for under $200 (USD) like the SD-500 or any higher number(s). The later models have Image Stabilization (is) and a faster 'engine' for processing.

These Canons are quite amazing!

Oh yeah... the subject matter, almost forgot.
These helios are used by the lumber companies to lift out whole logs from the forest. Many cases there are no roads to truck it out from remote areas and this is a lot faster. You'll see on the bottom of this beast, it says 6,000Lb maximum load. I saw these things take 4-6 logs at the same time.

The helio is a single seat for the pilot only and he sticks his head out at the sides to look for the load and where to drop it. Outside the door, there are gages to show the load and strain on the chopper blades.

If you want to see these things fly, search for KMAX helicopters and some people in Germany has good footage of them flying. Or click on these links:

One more thing.... not too bad to watch this in full screen as well... but keep some distance from the screen.
Let me know what you think.

It's sooooo cool !

Apart from the slight jitter (here on vimedo), I would of thought it was a normal video camera being used. Pretty cool video from a still camera.

Next time you should shoot from within the helicopter, while it's flying :)

Oh yeah... hanging from the skids!
    No room inside.
The jitter is the frame drops from vimeo ... and a lot of them missing.

Yeah, it's my handy shirt pocket 'video' camera.
Taking video from the car is rock steady when mounted on the windshield.
My regular camcorder can't do that, due to jitters in the image.

I did some google about their latest models, it seems to be the SD950, but it only does 1024*768 at 15FPS, What model would you recommend ?

    Hi Mathieu

Much as I love my canon, it does not do HD movies at 30fps
I use it by mounting it on my car windshield (inside) and tape long trips on 8Gb cards.
For that it's smooth as silk!
No jitters or problems as with regular camcorders that can't take bumps and jiggle the pictures really bad.

I haven't seen the Panasonic FX-500 yet, but seems to me that will be the best one for movies.
It does HD and maybe a better choice. Please go your camera store, take an SD card with you, plug it in the Pana FX-500 and take movies in the store in diff light conditions... light dark and outside as well. Then take your SD crd home and run it through your computer.
It's a better way to judge capabilities than looking at the small LCD in the store.
This camera just came out this month.
I am thinking about this pana to replace my canon.
