59. The Protagonist Suddenly Realizes What She Must Do In The Middle of Boringstown Nowhere...Adventures in Bicycling
3 months ago
So, due to prolonged technical difficulties with my video cameras, creating videos is still on indefinite hiatus.

Meanwhile...

A couple months ago, I went on a bike ride and took a couple thousand photographs. Here they are.

This is dedicated to Matthew (sanddunesandsea).

    haha love the title.

this makes me feel like i should take my bike out of the garage and pump the tires full of air / life. i have an itch.

ps. the song goes so well and also you have a cool bike and i keep having to edit this comment because i keep noticing new things k bye.
  • I feel like that more videos I make, the more ridiculous and ridiculous the titles are getting.

To be quite honest, watching this makes me want to ride my bike right now, other than the fact that I have a 25 pg paper due in a couple hours and it's like 11PM right now. Hhaa.

    Do it.

    GO GET YOUR BIKE!

What kind of bike do you have?

I love this song. It is "Pogo" by Digitalism
    Sooooo fun.

    Gets me pumped about life.

My bike's name is Holden Caufield.

He will be replaced eventually by a Bianchi Pista, but until then, he will serve me just fine as I cruise around town and take photographs.

    :-)

    Thanks a lot!

    I love your avatar.
  • mlijeko 3 months ago
mines just a regular mountain bike.

i love naming my inanimate objects! my laptops name is jude law. but then it changed to sasha. my ipod is igor. and sometimes i name my clothes.

i have a plant called mathias. i need to start thinking of last names though, yours is so original!

i name my unborns as well. i want to make a movie where someone collects all the names in the world. that would be cool.

re my avatar: thank you! i drew him myself. it is, funnily enough, -the- vincent grey.

25 pg paper? i can't wait until i have to start doing those! no really! i really can't! oh man! i'm just! oh man! so jealous!

    it'll be on sarcasm.
  • mlijeko 3 months ago
ps. i once had a jumper called umberto thidwick and i was heaps proud of that name.
  • haha.

I'm on page 13 or so of my paper...I haven't moved very far in the last 2 hours.

    i name EVERYTHING.

i had a pet cilantro named cecil...and the named carried over to my robot (seen in my videos) when the cilantro died. My digital camera's name is peanut butter, and my large telephoto lens is Jelly. My video camera's name is Hunter. My synthesizers have names too, one is Osiris. the other is Josiah.

Then there the wacom tablets...Clarence, Claudine.

    My car's name is Logan.

    you get the idea..

    I name everything.

    Matias is a great name.

Few of my belongings have first and last names...but the ones that do are special. Holden Caufield..i like how it sounded...independent from Catcher in the Rye...but people always say...oh like the book? Yeah I suppose so, but I named it not after him per say, but just how it sounded.

    haha.

    Very nice drawing.

Look at talented little you :-)

    cool videos AND drawings.

    HAHAHAH

    UMBERTO THIDWICK?!?!!?

    that's perfect.

now back to paperwritingsville for me...

great idea. i was waiting to watch that last night, but it was uploading forever, so i went to sleep :) damn time zones... what's the name of the song?
  • I owe you a message from like 10 days ago.

    Don't worry it will come.

The uploading took like 5 hours..it was unreal. My internet sucks.

    It is "Pogo" by Digitalism

    It is a good title.
  • Should've been "I'm supposed to be writing a paper but I'm wasting precious time editing this stupid video that should've been done months and months ago but I like to wait for the opportune moment to edit when I clearly dont have time for it."

    hahhaha

Should'nt you be doing your college work! My bike is called "Dave".
  • There's a little bit more leniency with grad school. I dicked around all of college...turns out I still dick around now.

    Bleh

Dave! What color/type of bike is Dave?
  • Bill 3 months ago
Dave is a blue mountain bike. At the moment he has a plastic carrier bag tied over his saddle to keep my bum dry. He's old but still a total hedonist.
  • haahah! you're so funny bill. Tell Dave I said hello!

you did it!! it's probably best you did post this now, given the speed at which i work. im still determined that mine/ a mix of the two will see the light of day sometime in the future.

p.s when i first read the description i thought that i had died. haha
  • haha it's okay matthew, I still love ya....but only this time. You're safe for now. But next time.....You should still post yours, it'd be a shame to let your photographs go to waste. I'm sure they are amazing cause you pretty much are as well.

    Hahaha.

This video is dedicated to the Memory of sanddunesandsea.

    hahaha

I hope joblookings are going well!!! :-) Ciao friend

This is one awesome Russian Cinematography paper. Do you think your professor would accept this as a substitute?
  • Haha I wish. Or I wish I could turn in the video I'm currently uploading...haha

Let's cross our fingers for an A. Although I don't think I deserve an A. It's pretty mediocre. Also If this is my midterm paper, I'm terrified to find out what the final paper is....

    50 pages?

    haha

I was going to comment when I woke up but somebody kept me up all night and I was late for work. Such wonderful colors! You really should make me a how-to video and share some of coloring magic.
  • Charlie McCarthy 3 months ago
And make another one for construction paper animation. I will send you my camera.
  • Whatever you keep me up everynight.

    You harlot.

    I love your colours too....

I'll make a how to video on how to love you less...because that's what i'm doing right now if you don't stop being so testy.

    I absolutely love it!
It fits soo well with this music!
  • Jip Eilbracht 3 months ago
And I like your tag, Thank you for watching my video.

My bike is real nice, I've got an old sky-blue one, a classic, I'm always called 'prince on the blue bike'. Unfortunately I don't have a name for it - I call it 'Kronan' as his brand is. But I should start thinking of a name for it, it's such a nice thing :)
*Unfortunately my bike just broke down.. something internal broke off and iI'm not sure if it can recover... :(
  • "Prince on the Blue Bike" is AWESOME! Haha maybe i should call you that from now on huh prince.

Uh oh...Is Kronan in the hospital or making his way up to the bike rack in the sky?

I hope he gets well soon! Then you guys can go on adventures!
  • Jip Eilbracht 3 months ago
It's in the hospital right now, I hope it'll make it and won't go to bike heaven...
Now I'm riding my mom's bike, but that's a real stupid one, I hate to ride on that one..

I got my Kronan for my 15th birthday, gosh I was happy! Then I got a thing which I can put in front of it, so I can carry stuff around.
Then, on a bad day my Kronan was stolen... In the beginning I didn't really thought about it, but I began to miss it more and more...
I got everyone on school to look out for my bike... In the hope somebody would find it.
Then, on a good day, I drove trough my neighbourhood and there I saw a blue bike, just like mine! I got closer and closer, and realized it was my Kronan! Quickly called my dad, he brought the key... and it fitted! So I could happily bike back on my Kronan!
Unfortunately Kronan was tortured very badly.. My number plate was kicked off (Now I've got a new one, but nothing to attach it on, so still no number plate), my horn was torn off (it was a real nice one, now I've got one which looks the same, but the sound is real horrible, I will always miss the sound from the old horn).
I hope it will get trough this bad unhealthy time...

*Gosh, this is a long story, sorry to use up your time if you red this*
  • Jip Eilbracht 3 months ago
Wait - I can send you a picture, I can imagine you're dying to see Kronan ;)
  • I am dying to see him. Oh man I started a group on facebook called "I love my bike more than you love your car" and people write stories about their bikes on there. I love hearing bike stories.

I'm so glad that you found him...you are lucky to. Kronan is lucky as well!
  • Jip Eilbracht 3 months ago
    Whoooo!
I just finished repairing Kronan! oh, I can see him being happy in the sun, all cleaned up and ready to get me to school tomorrow.
I'll send you a picture, and I'm bizzy making a nice lil' vid about Kronan :)
  • KRONAN!!!!! Yeay!!!! Make sure you lock him up good so no one tries to mess with him! Can't wait to see him!
  •
  • Bryan Teoh 3 months ago
love this! Terrible news about your camera but I'm glad you have a few videos stashed away so we can still get our dinosaur loving fix.

Oddly enough I just took some footage of my own bike adventure yesterday which was created under similar (bored) circumstances. Hopefully I'll get the chance to edit it down later today.
  • ROAR~!

That was my dino roar for you.

Yeah I'm trying to be as resourceful as I can. It doesn't help that I've been shooting lots of 16mm lately and I'm prepping for my final for my cinematography course. But I shall return with a children's story for you.

Actually I may just stop motion that.

Yeay I'd love to see your bike vid.. make sure you "share" it to me so I don't lose it in my inbox.

    !! have a great day!

Wow - that must have taken a LOT of clicking !
Great stuff - cool music. Who is that?

    My bike has no name...
but then it is a non-bike
  • yeah Soooooo much clicking..but SOOOO much space on my computer and more difficult to edit than I had originally anticipated.

    Music is "pogo" by digitalism.

awww no name bike. you should think of a name for when you do get one.

I'm already brainstorming bike names for my future Bianchi Pista.
  • Jip Eilbracht 3 months ago
How do you think of these names? I love 'em!
And how did you edit this? frame by frame?
  • Amenon 3 months ago
Hi Karen, how about "Fausto"? In honour of the great Coppi who won so many marvellous races on Bianchi bikes, who loved "la Dama Bianca" and whose name means "good fortune"... Hope you get that Pista soon :-)
  • Oh man I hope I get my Pista soon as well. I've always gotten soo close. I found the perfect one...perfect price...size...etc. I was so excited about it I told my friend (a guy who I had liked at the time) about it...and he went and bought it from underneath me.

    Sad Days.

Now my finances are devoted to paying for grad school so no pista for a while.

But one day..it'll happen..it has to.

And Jip I brought the thousands of pictures into imovie (for some reason it looked better there than on FCP). i exported it as a high quality MOV then i brought it into FCP and edited it to audio.

It was pretty tedious and obnoxious.

As far as color correction, i did it frame by frame...it took a couple days to color correct close to three thousand photographs....i didnt even end up using them all.
  • Jip Eilbracht 3 months ago
What?! Frame by frame colour editing?! That takes a lot of patience...
  • All you gotta do is listen to some good tunes, and you get lost in time when you're just focused in on your images. I should quit shooting/editing and just focus on color correction for the rest of my life. I really enjoy it.

i've only watched about 30 seconds of this video. that is partly because i am uploading and the stream was slow, but mainly because of the audio. did you compose the piece? if so, i will rewatch and probably greatly appreciate the experience. if not, i will say this:

your "video" is not actually a video(obv) but the piece is largely dependent on the audio. it would fall flat without an original song/audio comp. essentially, this is a music video.

i apologize for what may seem like a harsh critique, but it seems as if there are very few criticisms of your works. your work is strong, but it is weak that people let themselves become such sycophants...

what i suspect, is you are a young and attractive woman and they are all middle aged and unattractive men.

i try to capitalize on the middle aged and unattractive women. hehe.
  • This is not as much video as it is photomotion. Your criticism isn't harsh, and to be quite honest, I like it.

the song is pogo by digitalism.

This photomotion is completely dependent on the music. But that was also the intent from the beginning. This was supposed to be a collaboration with a friend. The idea was to go on a bike ride and just document it in photographs. No plot or story or narrative. Not a video, but photomotion. That didn't end up happening because of both of us being busy so I just ended up putting mine together. Since there's no real story I just kinda put them all together and used music to help the images. The difference between this and video is that I could take any single image of this and have it stand on its own as a photograph. (i am not sure if that makes sense.)

I get a lot of criticism (which I like) for my more serious work. 85% of the things on my vimeo are exercises that I do for fun. They are all spontaneous and don't require too much thought into them.

I am young..well not really but kind of, not really attractive...and I think my gender has no bearing on the criticism I receive. Or at least, I wouldn't like it to. Which is fantastic. I definitely get my work ripped apart, but that only helps me get better. The criticism doesn't come too much on these little videos cause they are all light hearted and for fun.

Usually for me, and many others...when i put something up that i want harsh criticism on, I will send a personal message to people who i feel would be good at giving constructive criticism to it and we work together on figuring out what worked, what didn't work. Vimeo to me is more based on the community aspect rather than that video ...that's just me personally.

I really enjoy your comments. Thank you so much :-)

  • Bill 3 months ago
Im a middle aged unattractive man. You got me.
  • I have no age. or gender.

    I'm a dinosaur.

I don't exist as a human. nothing to see here, kindly move along.
  • Bill 3 months ago
I feel insulted at the 'sycophant' bit. None of my business. Agreed.
  • Oh hey Bill...don't worry I don't think that's true at all.

(just to clarify, I had missed this earlier on in the initial comment...I even had to look up the definition, that's how stupid I am)

But yeah, not true...at all...ever. i would never ever think that i am better than anyone.
  • Bill 3 months ago
That really is not what I meant. I was referring to the original post that states some kind of objection to middle aged men, and of course the sychophant bit.
  • ed 3 months ago
One day we all become "middle aged and unattractive" to the youth of the time. It seems to me that as I've entered "middle age" I'm more attracted to "middle aged " women! (no offense meant to the young ladies of vimeo)
  • ed 3 months ago
Further, I don't see how saying nice things about someone's video is acting on any self interest.
