Here's a preview of a working prototype of a new version of ePlant by Jamie Waese, a PhD candidate in data visualization in the Provart lab, programmed by Hans Yu, with webservices from the BAR were created by Asher Pasha. The concept is to provide easy and very responsive access to data from multiple biological scales, and to permit linkages between these scales (for instance polymorphisms mapped onto protein tertiary structure) to be easily and intuitively explored to facilitate hypothesis generation.
Data are retrieved on the fly from webservices provided by the Bio-Analytic Resource (BAR, U. Toronto) and SUBA (U. Western Australia), who in turn have curated these data from public repositories. We see this zoomable user interface as one way in which biologists might access data currently being made available through the Arabidopsis Information Portal at araport.org. Funding for this work was provided by Genome Canada.
