"Enkin" introduces a new handheld navigation concept. It displays location-based content in a unique way that bridges the gap between reality and classic map-like representations. It combines GPS, orientation sensors, 3D graphics, live video, several web services, and a novel user interface into an intuitive and light navigation system for mobile devices.

I have been working on a much more seamless integration with GIS (i.e. shapefiles etc; in both professional desktop and web 2.0 apps) for digital photographs for the purposes of automated geolocalisation. Hope to have first prototype out soonish. The trick lies in various orientation sensors built into the video or digital camera, which is generally not as straightforward as the enkin developers suggest; but certainly do-able.

We put a lot of effort into testing it with real hardware components as you could see in the video. Developing Enkin for actual Android devices is, of course, another story. But we are quite confident about that.

and it looks good! I am looking forward to the idea in implementation.

Just found out about this project:

Its amazing to see the recent increase in geolocalisation research.

    Hi,
I just want to say, that your navigation device is a realy REALY good idea! Congratz!
Sometimes, I wish such thing for my grandparents, so that they have the connection between the map and their surrounding to better find their auto-route :).

Amazing, that would be awesome for Google's Android :)

no offense, but that seems kind of lame.
very basic, just data u overlay over live video, but the local awareness doesnt come from interpreting that live video, comes from gps and accelerometer vs geo db.
its too simple to be impressive.

I really like this concept! Even if Enkin uses data that has been readily available (GPS coords, tilt, camera feed) it combines them all to present something new. I would love to have that in my phone, whenever I get one which includes all the necessary features :P

Very nice work boys. It was inevitable that a program like this would be developed, and I'm glad that it will be associated with google, and the android brand/OS/devices. I can't wait to use it when I get one of the first android phones. I'd love to know what kind of phone you two get when they come out. (granting that you get one) again, nice work and I'm excited to play with it when it comes out. <3

Now this is very very cool. I look forwards to trying this out some time soon!!

Any eta on when you hope to release this and will it only be available for Android, i.e. Symbian s60 maybe??

Thanks to all of you for your enthusiastic comments! We appreciate that very much.

As for Dukeswharf's question, we do not have a definite release date yet, nor can we make any predictions about supported platforms. Our focus, however, is still on Android.

You will find future announcements on these and other issues in our blog: enkinblog.blogspot.com

Or if you get the orientation accurate enough, you could replace/overlay with reconstructed or prospective scenes/elements.
Live, walking history tour in a city? In famous buildings even, like Grand Central Station, giving you a snapshot of what it looked like 100 years ago.
