Talking with Father Bob

Father Bob Maguire has been a tireless worker for social justice in Melbourne for many years, and has more recently gained a degree of notoriety for his contributions to several projects by Melbourne comedian John Safran, notably the series "Speaking in Tongues", as well as their regular slot on JJJ FM.
Following a chance encounter in a downtown camera store, we arranged to meet with Father Bob, to discuss his thoughts. His septuagenarian status notwithstanding, Father Bob is a man with an eye firmly set on the future. He realises the need for the church to embrace new technologies and methods of communicating to the wider world, and the move to vodcasts is his latest means of propagating his particular version of the “good news” to the world.
The twenty minute interview with Father Bob was like a whirlwind. Prior to the interview, we had written down some questions, but as Father Bob began to talk, we realised that attempting to structure an interview along the lines of the traditional question and answer format was an exercise in futility.
Witnessing Bob unpack his vision can be likened to a jazz virtuoso drifting from one note to another, channelling divine inspiration, as well as a good measure of Dadaist surrealism. A true privilege to meet with Bob - long may his work continue.
