Combining images of staged performances, landscape meditation, archival family footage, on screen poetics, narration, and digital manipulation My Most Handsome Monster examines the collapse of intimacy, erotics, violence and transformation through the practice of consensual BDSM.
There are several theoretical and political questions this project is primarily concerned with: Wherein lies the slippage between subversion and reinscription, liberation and retention, real and imagined? How do BDSM practices stage, reinscribe, and /or open out historical narratives around race, bodies, power and subjugation? Might the seriousness of intersectional oppressions literally get “play time” through BDSM practices? And more broadly: How, where and when does transformation of the self happen?
