This artist's talk accompanies Alinah Azadeh's solo exhibition at Manchester Craft & Design Centre, 'The Gifts of the Departed'. The talk tells the story of the exhibition's objects, which form part of an ongoing collection made by the UK-based interdisciplinary artist.
Each of the objects have individually been bound in cloth, yarns and poetry. Azadeh’s work has been shaped by two huge life events which she experienced in quick succession; the birth of her first child and the tragic death of her mother in the 2004 Asian Tsunami. Her work is routed in communal rituals such as eating, and the giving and receiving of gifts and is inspired by Sufi poets Rumi and Hafiz.
