In this small movie you can see the difference between 28 Custom Presets on the Canon XH-A1. Each settings has it's own charactaristics for a whole collection of settings.

Each shot is about 10 seconds. This is version 1.0 where all CP's will be shown in daylight filming and there will be a second version showing them at night. In version 1.0 all names of the presets will are available and credits to their owners.

Custom Presets can be found at: dvinfo.net (English Forum) or hdvinfo.nl (Dutch weblog and forum).

    Great resource, thanks!

We are using most of these presets, however a few at the end I have never seen, and I can't seem to locate anywhere. Where might I go about finding Reality and TrueColor?
  •
  • Gert Kracht plus 2 years ago
Both presets (Reality and TrueColor) are available on the DVinfo.net forum:

    Reality: dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=81071&page=15

    and

    Truecolor: dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=116993

Thanks for the compliments. I will also make a evening version (a bit dark version) and a night version with the same presets.

    Gert,

Great stuff on the preset movie, I look forward to the extra versions with less light. What is the music you used? I really like it!

I got an suggestion for the next version: Make a movie with skintones and use all the new presets (more than 40).

Right now my camera is away for repairs (I almost lost my firewire port last year and I decided that it was time to bring it to a repair centre so I can pick it up after our vacation).
After our vacation I also switch to Apple Pro (with Final Cut) and I'm planning to go for another extra 100% on the next version of the preset movie.

Any EXTRA suggestions are very welcome!!

For me it was THE SWITCH to real video editing. Two days ago I also added a MacBook Pro for the field work. I was lucky to get the old model with two firewire ports.

Hi Gert. This is great. I was wondering you if you could explain or direct me to some explanation for WHY one might like to use custom presets to begin with, especially given that you can color correct in post.

    Thanks!
  • Gert Kracht plus 10 months ago
There are more than one reasons:
    1. Constant settings of the camera.
    2. When using more A1's you can copy them to all camera's.
    3. There are more settings in the custom preset menu which you can't control on the outside of the camera.
    4. Colour correction in post isn't always the right answer for correcting everything. But....when changing the settings of the camera one has to realise that some changes can't be corrected afterwards. So be careful out there...

    Hi Shahin,

Custom Presets are handy if you want to save your own custom settings for filming. There are so many things you can customise on the XH-A1 it is almost an impossible job to change them each and every time you want to record something.

Ofcourse you can do everything in post and it's not required to make great video footage. It's just a 'tool' to help you.

And what about situations where you have to or more camera's and you want to work with exact the same settings? A CP is very handy in those situations. Just copy the file to the other SD card and use them in that camera.

There is only one thing to think off though: white balance!

After shooting with the A1 for a year, I'm trying to wrap my head around the different presets. In shooting the fall foliage up here with VIVIDRGB, I've found that preset does some things I'm not totally pleased with.

I looked at all the sub-settings within each preset and when fully adrift amidst all the gammas, knees and other body parts I found your video very helpful.

Being a visual person, your side-by-side examples really narrowed down which settings might work best on tomorrow's shoot.

Thanks for doing this. It's been a BIG help to me.

BTW: I really like that gd music.

Please take a look at the comments. Two new links can be found to download all presets.

Almost all presets can be downloaded at:
    hdvinfo.nl/download/presets.zip
    hdvinfo.nl/download/Presets.xls

There are some new presets which I will add in the near future. I think it's nice to see them in the same movie so everyone can compare them.

okay ... i've spent six hours and counting now, and have scoured all the forums. i have downloaded the presets, dragged them onto a card on my mac desktop, (created a PRESET folder) .... the camera will NOT recognize them, or copy them ... or even 'un-gray' the option. i'm stumped.

    any ideas ?

I want to see a video with these setting used at night. i'm a news stringer and work at night someone on here told me my video looks flat but if i up the color then the lights from fire and police reflect and splatter on things around them.
  • Gert Kracht plus 6 months ago
    Hey Chas,

In my experience you can do the next best thing to push up the colors: switch OFF the presets, set the camera to KELVIN (under the LCD screen) and on the left set the A/B/PRE switch to PRE. Then push the white balance button until there is a four figure number flashing on your screen. That's the Kelvin setting. You can change that number to 3200 or 3600 at night. (That means more blue is going to be mixed in to the picture, because the actual picture contains more red. During the day you can use the same methode and set it to 5600 or 6000K) As soon as the settings are changed. Push the whilebalance button again until the flashing xxxx (

Hi Gert. Very good job! Do you know something about indoor presets? I was trying to modify some presets, but I got some problems when I left my work transfer to film. The technical people told me that presets is only good for digital and normal sizes, but when you need to do something serious like tranfer to film or a independet movie, you lost a lot of quality. Any help? Cheers!

This video is a great resource! Thanks for doing it.
Here's a example of a preset I made and have used pretty consistently on the last few projects I have done:

    vimeo.com/7255576

was also used on this one:

    vimeo.com/6681928

but BLK was set to STRETCH. The H.264 codec tends to wash out the video a bit, but the raw preset should have more contrast than this.

here are the settings if anyone is interested:

    PRIMEEIGHT
    GAM 2
    KNE L
    BLK M
    PED -9
    SET -9
    SHP 4
    HDF M
    CMX 2
    CGN -4
    RGN 8
    GGN 11
    BGN 12
everything else is set to 0.
