Roots to Harvest is about good food.

We are an organization located in Thunder Bay, Ontario who employs a number high school students to develop and maintain urban gardens. These students are exposed to the wide world of gardening, learning who to plan, design, implement and maintain an urban garden. Each student is employed full time in the summer, and part time during the school semester. During the summer the group lends a hand at numerous local farms, learning techniques, and working up a sweat! It is Roots to Harvest goal to make these students employable, hard working, happy and knowledgeable about the importance of good local food. On January 18, 2014 the group met at the new office location to begin the planning and preparation for the coming spring. That included the unusually fun task of seed saving! The kids spent the entire day breaking, crushing, carving, picking, sifting and counting a large variety of seeds. Jo Anne Henderson, a local seed saver, was there to guide and educate us on the importance of seed saving. It was a wonderful experience, and the group learned just how important seed saving is to promote a healthy and productive garden.
