67. Adrienne Learns to Fly.
Story about a young man talking about his childhood friend who wants to fly.

(NOTE: I've noticed that everything I've shot in the last month has been pretty incoherent and arbitrary so I decided to REMIX my footage into something more cohesive that I wrote. Also, I've been anxious to edit something since I can't shoot anything. This was also an experiment in working with Vimeo friends that live far away.)

oh man oh man i love this so so much!

one of my favourite things is combining written word with visuals and like this is an amazing example of that.

the voice, that was an amazing voice. the shots, amazing shots. and the words were so lovely. killer credits.

i have a video i'm working on at the moment with some words i wrote where one of the people flies away. so this is very inspirational. and just looking at how beautiful this was makes me retreat into self-consciousness because i have no where near those kind of skills or equipment to do ideas justice.

oh well! this was simply phenomenal, and a real credit to everyone who took part.

ps. how did your paper go, karen?
  • It was extremely difficult to write this for some reason. I always have trouble writing things which is why i don't want to be a screenwriter.

    Remi's voice is beautiful.

    He's a beautiful soul/person.

    Charlie has golden eyes.

They are fantastic friends. I love them.

(I am not normally proud of anything I do..but the credits, I'm really proud of. I liked them a lot as well. They are sitting on my desk.) I had to gaff tape the paper to the grass because it was so windy.

I think flying is a beautiful thing. no no no don't retreat. I know for a fact that you will create something of great beauty.

    You have the skills.

Equipment comes along with a good idea. Charlie's camera is far superior to my camera, and you can tell. But if you have a good eye, that doesn't matter as much. You can do it! :-)

It was fun to wrangle up these boys and give them direction from thousands of miles away. haha

    The paper..

    turned in.

    not quite happy with it..

    but it's done.

haha I think you saw my timelapse of my screen capture...so unproductive. I was working on this while I should've been working on the paper. Hahha

You're fantastic vincentgrey :-) (what is your real name?)
  • sacha milk 2 years ago
i would -kill- to be a screenwriter. it is / was totally my dream for about 3yrs. which is a long time for me because i swap career choices every two seconds.

but what you wrote is beautiful so it goes to show.

i read your comment below because i'm one of -those- people. i have bad insomnia too! except lately it's reversed on me so i am sleeping so much that i have no idea where all my time is going. so expect to suddenly, in the middle of dinner, have a crushing need to sleep for a whole month after years of staying up and never sleeping and reading and watching and .. avoiding calls and text messages from some boy. oh god. brb.

oh god. i'm back. i could just delete the above but hey, i like when something happens midway through a comment and the writer narrates. no matter what it is. 'brb someone just broke in and is threatening me with a toothpick' etc. oh and i have to thank you for your lovely reassurance. not that i was being all 'omg plz reassure me' but there's nothing quite like an amateur like me hearing something like that from someone who obviously knows what they're talking about.

this comment is too long / personal / unfiltered / unedited.

almost forgot: my name is ena. that's eh-na, not ee-na. or whatever. whichever you want. i don't mind. as long as it's not 'eena-peena macareena' or i will cut to a flashback and cry.

pleased to meet you. and hey, you're pretty stellar yourself.
  • Wow I just now noticed this. I am not on vimeo as much as I used to because I"m working on my screenplay and my finals. I swap career choices every two years.

    (kind of not a lie)

I have a feeling I will switch again once i'm done with grad school. Oh well. I think my main goal is to find something that I am happy with.

    Still searching.

Yeah I don't sleep too much and during the day I've become more and more tired and have required naps lately. It's sick I don't want it. Uh oh...avoiding calls and texts from a boy....

I think its hilarious that you said BRB in a comment. Because I am reading it continuous. I think it's awesome.

I hope that no one threatened you with a toothpick.. I would've strangled them with dental floss.

long arbitrary comments are best...well I think that I may leave some of the most lengthy comments on vimeo videos. Most of the time they stray from the initial video that the comment space is allocated for.

Ena. First Ena I've ever met. What is its origin?

    flashback w/voice over.

    Fade out.
  • sacha milk 2 years ago
[setting. ena is hunched over her laptop, the tapping sound of fingers hitting mac keys echoes in the dark solemnity of her empty room, almost drowning out the soft lulls of an unrecognisable tune that plays in the background.]

ena: so what do you want to be? currently? cinematographer? and i'm curious, because i want to absorb as much of this as possible: what are you studying at grad school exactly? and what degree did you graduate from? there are so many options these days! i find myself interrogating everyone that passes my way who is at a similar place to where i would like to be. what are you planning after grad school? too many questions? sorry!!

your comments are so great. i think you should get an award or something.

ena is irish i think, but it is also greek, it means 'one'. i'm the one, the chosen one, hoorah. uh no.

but really it's less exciting than that, my grandmother named me after some b-grade slavic actress.

[zoom out on room. fade out. black screen. keys tapping. keys stop. music swells.]
  • Haha.

I have a strong disdain for Final Draft since I've been using it so much lately.

What do I want to be? Currently? I have no idea. I wish I knew. I think it's not so much what I want to be as what I can do to make myself happy. I'm still searching for what that might be. That's not to say I am unhappy, I'm just quite unsure with what I want to do with my life, but I guess that's normal for a single 20something in grad school. Currently, I am pursuing an MFA in Motion Pictures + Television with an emphasis in Cinematography. I graduated last May (07) from college with a double major in Psychology (BA) and Film Studies (Theory, not production) with a minor in Media Studies. hahha it's okay your questions are fine. I realize there's not exactly much about me on the profile part of my Vimeo, just a bunch of links. It's always nice when people want to get to know you better. What about you?

I should get an award in not doing school work because I get distracted easily.

You are the chosen one. :-)

haha still a cool name for a cool person!

    hope youa re well
  • sacha milk 2 years ago
i know what you mean about the 'trying to find something that'll make me happy' thing. seems like most people eternal quest. when you graduated college was when i started! i've just started my second year at university, with a double major in film studies (theory also, not production, so frustrating! it's good, but practical is always better) and art history, also a BA. i feel really scattered at the moment, seeing as my friend had the foresight of doing a film production course which i am excruciatingly jealous of. but initially i wanted to go to art school, then i convinced myself i wanted an academic degree blah blah. anyway, now i'm reaping the consequences and i'm starting to think i won't be able to finish this degree because of said frustration and i'll have to live out of a cardboard box with lots of school fees and no prospects. though, considering it's a BA i could be living out of a cardboard box even if i graduate. i totally suck a life choices. like, can you imagine? what a thing to suck at! of all things! life choices! man! come on! give me a break!

which is why i'm trying to gather information from people who have made -smart- life choices.

as for what i want to be, i don't know, i think i just want to be as creative as possible in every avenue of life, which means also having a job that caters to that. i want to be miranda july, essentially. the whole artist / (screen)writer / director package. i know. rip-off. not miranda july per se, but there's no word for that kind of person. maybe 'artist' but not in the strict sense. god, i sound so excruciatingly pretentious. i am this close to the backspace key.

and i can't summon up the power to do this film analysis on blue velvet at the moment. arrghhhhhhh. what is -wrong- with me.

    ok ok ok . work.

ps. i have become worse and worse at disguising my neuroticism from people! i though i might address that now instead of you being like 'oh my god, does this girl have any idea what she sounds like?'. yes! yes i do! it's a curse! runs in the family!

hope you've had an amazing day, karen abad PhD.

really nice work. quite hard to even keep up watching all the videos you're putting up lately :) when do you sleep? during rendering times? :)
  • Hahahah...This was probably the final one for a bit. Just because I've run out of footage to edit. Haha. Also I've been shooting at the minimum two 16mm projects a week. Must allot some time to give my video cameras love so I can mend their broken hearts.

Also the thing you must know bout me....

I have the worst case of insomnia ever.

I catch up on sleep every once in a while but I am awake...A LOT....and I think my activity feed is proof of that.

Who the heck is "liking" videos at freaking 4 in the morning.

    me

    loser.

    hahaha

For some reason being awake just gives me an excuse to do other things like type on my typewriter or play my synths...but there's so much stuff i need to be doing but put off because i have some weird wicked ADD....for example, writing you back. and some others.

    that will happen soon enough.

    cross our fingers.

    Thanks Martin!

even though the film was about flying it made me feel relaxed somehow :)

very interesting cooperation, I wish we can see more like it between our community members.
  • Aww I'm glad. I wish I could fly. I stare at birds all the time. Actually flight has always intrigued me for some time now.

I think that's one thing I love about Vimeo, is that the community is so strong that cross country/continent collaborations are possible because we have the care and consideration to invest in people that we have grown to become good friends with.

Have a great day Moayad! Thanks for taking the time out to watch this.

great work! it's cool seeing these shots recontextualized. Love the music
  • Aww thanks Bryan. I sort of thought that maybe it would be a boring cop-out since some people may have already seen my other videos, but it's actually quite a challenge to take video out of its original context and try to piece it together into something coherent.

    :-) Have a beautiful day!

  • dwyzak 2 years ago
So this is made up from various shorts that you have grabbed, and your own? Mixed into a new story?
That's amazing, really really quite special.
  • Well here let me explain what happened here. Since I started grad school, I've had less and less time to work on really thought out projects. (i.e. ones with preproduction planning, storyboarding, etc etc) In the last 2 months, I've been EXTREMELY busy with my classes so everything I've shot for the last month and a half or so has been just brief exercises so I can develop and practice skills in composition or other cinematographical and aesthetic elements of filmmaking. I do this in my spare time. I usually just go out and shoot whatever, which is what majority of the videos I've put up on vimeo have been. There hasn't been much thought put into them. Arbitrary shooting, intensive practice in color correction and just editing for fun.

There was a film festival that I wanted to enter a film into....however..I realized that I hadn't shot anything with a story in the last 2 months. So I decided to go through all these "exercises" and try to make a story out of all of them. After painstakingly watching my videos for hours...I realized that all of them have a certain "flight" element to them. I jotted down notes and got ideas of what footage I wanted to use...however there were major gaps and holes.

Since my cameras have been broken, i couldn't shoot anything new (except for the credits sequence that I shot borrowing a friend's camera for a day). I asked Charlie if he could help me and i gave him some concepts and ideas to shoot different things and later on directed him to what I wanted him to shoot.

After that, there was something else missing....and that was some over arching thing to tie it all together. that's where the story/voice over came in. I normally don't like voice overs. But I felt like this was something that could help my footage.

    Here's the story:

A little girl and a boy have been friends all their life. The girl was never allowed to leave her house, her parents made her stay in the backyard to play. So the boy would come over everyday after school and they'd just play in the backyard. Her desire to fly was basically the desire to be free from the restraints of her over protective parents...and a way to entertain herself and her best friend by means of whimsical dreams.

That's basically it..there's more but that's the just of it. Anyways then I asked Remyyy to help me and we backed and forth with his audio and i gave him direction and catered the dialogue i wrote to match him more.

The sad part was that I missed the deadline, and wasn't able to turn anything in. Because i didn't even edit it in time...I was so busy with other things. I almost didn't want to finish it anymore but I figured I should. So I did. There are several ways this can be improved, but for now, this is what it is because I'm entirely way too busy to put anymore thought into it.

Hahha wow that was long and drawn out.

    But yeah...hee hee.

    Take care dwyzak!

  • Aww thanks a lot Tim. That is awfully generous of you to say. I love Gondry. I can't say he's exactly "inspiration" for when I do things because I feel like this is the kind of stuff that has been going on for many people for years, but he is the most well known. He is a genius in his own respect.
