How did you encode, when I upload my XH-A1 footage, it looks blurry.

You used a 35MM adapter right?
  •

    swiss brazil
nice, but feels a bit like a car commercial... which is sort of a compliment as that's the only kind of commercial where they really seem to focus on great cinematography.
  • John Hope 2 months ago
Yeah, swiss brazil. Car commercial? This is a compliment to me!
  • Hoop-CA, USA 2 months ago
I didn't feel 'car commercial'. I got 'people' (and beautiful women).

Great techniques used here. I learned a lot by watching .

Did you use any color treatment/correction? This video looks great!
  • John Hope 2 months ago
As i used the Disjecta setting on the camera which is quite reddish
So to compensate i added some green.
Then i lowered a little bit the blacks which are never really black in the XH A1.

Truly an amazing video. The picture quality is so cinematic, I would never guess it came from video. That adapter you use must be excellent, plus your shooting style is superb.

    whoa, nicely shot.

i've been the lugano quite a few times (my father used to work there). it is a beautifull city and from a skateboarders view: i love the smooth pavements haha.

there is a 1 million swiss franks costing skatepark in lugano at the sportpark (soccer field) next to a cinema. i'm sure you'll be albe to make great shots there too.
  • John Hope 2 months ago
Yeah, this is a great idea. I see it occasionally, but i never thought to shoot there. Especially because with the XHA1 i can't do super slow motion, that would be welcome.

you have an experience with HVX200 and XHA1, well, what´s better to you?
  • John Hope 2 months ago
    Simply said: XHA1.
The HVX has easier colors (they look fantastic out of the box, has better codec and this is only visible on fast camera moves and subject moves. The image remains clean, stable, very stable)

HDV (XHA1) is nice until you have fast moves. The codec almost breaks and your brain notices something weird, not constant, not cliean. And the XHA1 has stronger colors, which is good, but it's really hard to create a look with it. But it's possible with some work.

What i like of the XHA1 is the lower noise and the better resolution.
In this price range the only cam that seems to beat the XHA1 for resolution and noise is the Sony EX1, but i hate it's latitude and colors.

I love the Kodak 250D film combined with an Arri.... hehehe!!!
  • Italo Valerio 2 months ago
Thank you very much about you said.
The real resolution start in many questions, the first is the how much pixels have in CCD/Cmos. Some camcorders have 1920x1080 captured file but the Sensor have only 800x1080. No have miracles. Do you know how much resolution the HVX200 has ?
  • John Hope 2 months ago
This is the point. The HVX is far to be an HD camera. It's half way between SD an HD and it's painly.
It has 3 x 920px ccds, now matter how they shift them, the resolutions is this one, even if in the white paper they demonstrate that it can deliver a full hd image. It's a lie.
If you work for SD, the HVX resolution is good, but still and always soft.
When you see some commercials, shot with 35mm film, all that resolution, somehow is perceptible from a SD monitor.
In other words, the more the starting resolution, the better quality, even if you work in SD.
The market is moving fast, i would never recommend an HVX now. This year we could have great new cams coming out, with tons of resolution and quality.
  • Italo Valerio 2 months ago
it explain why i think the videos made with HVX is more soft which Z1. Z1 have 1Mpixels if i remember well. (sorry my english)
  •
  • John Hope 2 months ago
Yes, and XHA1 has 1.6 Mpx per chip.

    Muito impressionante!

Your work is a perfect example of the relative importance of the type of camera used. I'm far more impressed by your talents as a cinematographer than by resolution, although I have to admit I'd love to see your skills at work on a RED.

    Cheers!

    Great stuff mate. Really beautiful.
Your focus racking is really good. Do you use any follow focus wheels? And what lens and f-stops did you use?

    I'm inspired.
  • John Hope 1 month ago
I use the IndiFocus and those lenses:
    Nikon Nikkor 85mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.4, 24mm f/2.8
