Mike Hedge and I drove to Austin for SXSW - we stopped to get out of the car and walk around quite a few times, taking pictures and video... just cause that's how we roll.

I didn't really know what to do with all this footage :P so, I just smoothcam'd some of it and put it to a song. Kinda long'ish... kinda boring'ish. But I'm sure Mike and I will enjoy it. Good times.

  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Oh... hmm, I'll have to check what is on these two white tapes I found. I think... uhm, I think they might be of B-Side.

    really enjoyed that man!

looks like you guys must have had a really good trip.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks :) Yea, it was a fun trip. Although the drive did make us a little crazy - we were supposed to drive all through the night to get our of LA and avoid traffic... instead we both stayed up all night working on our projects... Hedge came and got me at 6 in the morning, and we drove all day and into the next night before really sleeping :P

    Wouldn't recommend it :)

i hear ya on that one,

that sounds pretty intense, long trips can get pretty tiring for sure.

That new smooth cam filter is off the chain.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Off the chain indeed :) I don't know how I ever lived without it.
  • Blake Whitman staff 2 years ago
    seconded, holy smokes!
  •
  • I don't think i can ever go anywhere without stopping for a while and filmming.

    <3 it mike.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
I need a smaller camera though :P it's kind of hard to casually stroll around taking footage with my Z1u :P

    Glad you <3'd it.

Nice footage, I liked the images from the sunset.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Gerardo :) Yea, that was a great sunset - it was gone so fast though, honestly we really missed the best part just in the time it took us to pull off the highway and find a side street.

I am learning so much from watching your videos. I really believe by finding Pedal you have made me really look at what I do in such a way that I want to be creative and break rules to forge my own style.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Tiff... you say... the nicest things. Really - you have no idea how happy this comment makes me. I'm just a stupid kid from a stupid little town :P I'm not supposed to do anything for anyone...

Wow! Just amazing! How do you control the DOF like that? Wow!
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Jami :) Uhm, well for the flower thingy shot, I was just really zoomed in, so I have a lot more DOF to mess with. You're too kind.

That first shot is kind of amazing. Inspiring.

  • wow....really incredible. I absolutely LOVE the smoothcam stuff. It gives it a feeling that I cant really fully understand yet. Very inspirational.

What kind of shotgun mic you got on that FX1? Have we talked about this before? :)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Michael - yea, snoothcam is pretty great :)

I have a CS-1, and my camera is actually a Z1u, which is basically the same thing - except it has XLR inputs for the microphone I have :P

  • Had to comment again. What are you using for the smoothcam? Final Cut or Shake?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
I just use the filter that's in Final Cut - I know there's a few more options you can tweak in Shake and Motion, but I haven't really needed them yet.

I need a driver! and streets which my car can stop to their sides!

Wonderful footage by the way :)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Wait :) I'm a little confused, how you need a driver?

Thanks for watching - glad you liked it.
  • Moayad Hassan plus 2 years ago
I mean somebody to drive the car while I'm filming or looking for things to film on the side of the road... since I always do the driving :)

And even if I find something nice to film I can't stop because the roads here in Birmingham (UK) are just too narrow to stop the car to the side, if you want to stop you must find a parking space!

It might sound stupid but its true unfortunately, and I just realised that after seeing your video :)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Ohhh :) gotcha - I'm slow. Yea, it's hard to do the whole film/road trip thing alone.

    Mike,
Awesome video. The background music compliments the video very well. The still shots are awesome especially of the tree and the sun behind it. Great shot.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Thanks Tommy :) yea, I love that song.

quite something when your "walking around" footage is better than most of the primary footage out there. that opening shot is really something -- reminds me of gus van sant's "gerry." (should take a look if you haven't seen it.)
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 2 years ago
Hey Patrick :) Thanks, I'm glad you liked this. 'Gerry' is one of my favorite films, it's definitely 1 of my top 3 inspirations behind 'Pedal'. Once I start cutting the feature film, I'll probably have Gerry on in the background on a loop :D

inspirational! loved the opening shot and how smooth all your walking around footage is!! how did you get it so smooth!!!?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks Skyler :) There's a filter in Final Cut Pro called SmoothCam - it takes most of the "bump and sway" out of walking around shots... it's the best filter ever.

    How did I miss this?

mike this is so pretty. i kind of want to see a portion of this "before SmoothCam" to compare it. wow. also, can we take a road trip so you can film me running next to joshua trees? haha that would be the sweetest thing ever.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks Annie :) Yea, I love walking around the desert... it's so empty and beautiful. Hmm, I think I burned off this footage onto a DVD as a back-up (I know I have the tape still), but it should be easy for me to upload somewhere and show you.

And psh :) anytime. I would love to go film you running around Joshua NP. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a vlogger camp-out :D !!! Ohh, we have to do that, I need to make an upcoming event for this... we'll just go out to somewhere awesome, like JNP, and tape stuff, take pics, hang out, tell ghost stories.

  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Bryan :) Thanks - yea, SmoothCam is amazing - I heart it. I don't know what I would do without it :P probably have a lot of shaky unusable footage sitting on my drives :)
