Race Summary:
24TH MARCH OULTON RACE DAY - RACE 1
Ben’s first race was at 11.05am. The weather forecast was due to be sunny, however there were snow showers on and off all morning and a decision had to be made whether to use wets or dry's for the race.
Ginetta made that decision by declaring it a wet race, so the team put on the wet tyres and Ben headed off to the assembly area.
50 guests of our main sponsor Applewood were watching the race from the comfort of a hospitality suite.
This year all of Ben’s races will be starting with a rolling start. This means instead of lining up on the grid and waiting for the lights to change, all drivers slowly drive up to the lights and then when they change they then accelerate and the race starts.
As the conditions had been poor the organisers decided that each race would have 2 green flag laps and the drivers were told, unfortunately there was a little bit of confusion and when they came round on the first green flag lap the lights changed and Ben and Nigel along with the other drivers started to race. Ben made a cracking start and was leading on the first lap only to find the safety car still on track. He knew something wasn’t quite right so he slowed down and waited behind the safety car for the other drivers to all get back together in position.
When they came round again to the start line they had to do it all over again and this time Ben didn’t get a good start but stayed in 2nd place behind Nigel.
The race was 30 mins long and DRY; this sadly meant that the drivers were struggling on wet tyres.
Ben kept up with Nigel Moore and they swapped positions a few times but as they settled into the race Ben couldn’t quite catch Nigel and the driver in 3rd place was a long way away, so he decided that second place would probably be the result he would get and that he did.
After the podium celebrations where Ben received his trophy and champagne he then inspected the tyres. Sadly they were ruined and with the chance of another wet race at 5pm Ben had no choice but to go and pay £890 on a set of new wet tyres. When you’re on a budget this is not what you need!
