Written and produced by Brian Dolan, Professor of Medical Humanities at UCSF, this 43 minute educational film tells the story of how a group of researchers at UCSF pulled together resources to design, build and sell the first MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine to be placed in a hospital for clinical use. Tracing the history "from idea to IPO", from 1975-1984 (when FDA approval was gained), the work of this team is placed within the context of Bay Area bio-entrepreneurship, using filmed interviews with the primary scientists, physicians and venture capitalists involved. Includes archival footage from the MRI company that oversaw the manufacture of MRI, Diasonics. Copyright Brian Dolan 2010.
