In collaboration with luxury lifestyle event producer BlackList, Hfour was invited to create a custom projection mapping experience at the Park Hyatt in Shanghai for the countdown to 2014 party, sponsored by Veuve Cliquot, Dom Perignon, Grey Goose and Sennheiser. The venue in the Park Hyatt was the 100 Century Avenue Restaurant, on the 91st floor of the Shanghai World Financial Center Building, at the time, the tallest building in China, and the highest restaurant in the world. The windows of the venue overlook the Jin Mao tower, holding the Grand Hyatt; the Oriental Pearl tower; and The Bund.

Upon investigation of the venue, it appeared that there were few surfaces for architectural projection mapping. We subsequently suggested to create a set of geometric surfaces for projection, instead of using a temporary rectangular screen.

The overarching style of the event was art deco meets contemporary city, which came from the interior experiential design of the Park Hyatt property. Hfour researched the design process of the property as well as old books and new blogs about art deco style in design as well as architecture. With this inspiration, we proceeded to create animated art deco motion graphics, specifically designed for a hexagonal geometric form.

In addition to the art deco projection mapping content, we curated a set of timelapses of Shanghai, mirrored, kaleidascoped, and tiled into captivating visual content which matched the landscape through the windows below the custom geometric projection surfaces.

To complete the set of content used for the installation, custom 3D content was created to match the form of the actual objects used as projection surfaces. Virtual lights illuminated real surfaces.

Content production as well as creative planning and direction was done remotely, in Vancouver, Canada. Weekly online planning meetings with Blacklist, frequent emails to a very helpful staff at the Park Hyatt, and a lot of screen sharing led to a successful communication and eventual execution of plans. Reviews of the event have been largely very positive, some even comparing the party to a level of sophistication rarely seen outside of luxury brand events and shows. We couldn't be more pleased.

This event marks the first time Hfour has performed in China, and the second time Hfour's visual media has been displayed in the Park Hyatt, Shanghai.
