"In the end all that matters is..." is a Social Design for Change Project. The project endeavours to provoke thought in people. We popped up locally and engaged people on the street in the suburb of Brunswick, Melbourne, Australia and asked each person to provide us with some words around what is important to them in light of their ultimate physical finitude. In order to do this in an easily accessible way, we incorporated a phrase that required completion by participants. "In the end all that matters is..." Each participant provided unique words to finish this phrase, identifying what is important to them 'In the end'. Engagement was very high. People were interested in the phrase and thoughtfully completed their leaflet with their own handwriting.
We wanted to capture the human experience in regard to what is of ultimate importance in ones life, in words. And we wanted to reflect these words back to the local community in which they had been provided - in a public space. Our aim was to connect with people at street level and to create a rippling conversation around the core premise of the unfinished phrase. Essentially, to encourage people to stop and really consider what is of ultimate importance in life. And if a person didn't have time to deeply consider it, writing whatever came to mind was perfectly acceptable as we hope that people may think about it again. And talk about it. With others. We hope that generating thought and conversation around the core of this project will lead to a fundamental human concern rising to the surface to create some type of authentic social change.
We are now in the process of replicating this project across Melbourne in two other suburbs that possess distinct sociodemographic differences. We are aiming to create a sociodemographic comparative of community words around what really matters in the End.
