18. 1Dmk4 Footage From Sydney New Years Eve 2009
2 years ago
This is a thrown together piece of footage I took with Canon's new 1Dmk4 which I had the chance to have a play with for a few days thanks to Ben Walton from Team Digital in Perth Western Australia.

I was off on True North again to capture some highlights of their Sydney Rocks cruise for New Years. I packed the 5Dmk2 and of course the Brand Spanking New 1Dmk4.

The pressure was on on two levels. One to shoot some nice footage for the owners of True North and Two to do justice to Canon's new super camera. Unfortunately no one told the weather to play ball and it was a dull grey dreary few days in Sydney.

Of course this is great for even light but if your trying to sell beds on boats blue sky wins out everytime. I alternated between the two camera's so I have more footage from this trip but I wanted to show only 1D footage in this edit.

I couldn't really distinguish between the footage of
the two cameras but noticed that the 1Dmk4 footage looked a little softer than the 5D. Maybe it was due to a smaller sensor and shooting 24p. Don't really know but it made me want to favor the 5D more.

The low light capabilities seemed no better than the 5D and as soon as I see noise in my footage I tend not to push the ISO anymore. At around 400 ISO on both cameras the noise to me became unacceptable but a proper test with both cameras in a studio set up would tell the story better.

Would I buy a 1Dmk4 over a 5Dmk2 if it was just to shoot video? Probably not. This was not a true opportunity to test the camera as I had a job to do and stuffing around was not an option. I'll get another chance with this camera in the next few days so maybe I'll set up some better tests.

Enjoy this for what it is. It's not my best work but at least those of you who are looking at this camera may have a better informed decision if considering buying one.

Gear used included 1Dmk4, 5Dmk2, Canon lenses TS-E 17mm f/4, 24mm f1.4, 85mm f/1.2, 400mm f/5.6, Filters etc etc......

Footage looked the same as the 5D to me, so its probly not worth twice the money of the 5D i reckon.
bloody good video for thrown together!!

I couldn't pick it either but I'm sure its a little bit softer than the 5D.

It looked positively colourful to me but then I am from Old North Wales and I think we invented greyscale here. I still think the 5D2 suits me better too. Roll on firmware! I wouldn't want the extra weight or crop frame of the 1D4.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
I'll second that. The 5D is the benchmark and anything less doesn't stack up.

    Cheers Andrew

Not all killer shots I'll grant you, but there's some crackers in there. Just one thing, (trying to be helpful here) The big guitars and fireworks is totally brilliant, but when they drop out to the piano sound, maybe you could bring the cut to the close up red fireworks forward a bit to fit the music change? apart from that…

    Of course I hate it…

Nice shots, i like the intro shot with the large buildings bading in the sunlight, also the shot with the giraffe is very cool, that animal does not belong here, maybe they have also verry big buildings in the african savanna too, who knows!

Hi Michael your a lucky man to test the new 1Dmk4, i think too that the MarkII is a great camera (The greatest camera at the moment) i do not think there is a killing camera against the MarkII, i am only waiting for a firmewaire update to able 24 fps as D7 and DmkIV, hope so very soon.

Happy New Year to US!! Thanks for sharing this footage so quickly. I can't think of a better way for you to start your New Year...looks like 2010 will be a big show for you! Loved the giraffe and elephants...always my favorite. Now I can rest a little easier knowing that a firmware update maybe all I need to stay on top of this technology instead of buying the 1Dmk4. Look forward to more testing results and your final cut for True North! Happy 2010!

Did you use the 5D for any of the opening shots with the water? (rock and boats in the back, the dock) I tend to see some aliasing when shooting water, so I was wondering if that was the 1D in those shots or if you applied a filter.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
The whole thing was shot with the 1Dmk4. It does all the same bad things as the 5Dmk2. It seemed to stutter more also in panning than the 5D. You just have to live with it. Still the pro's still out-way the con's.

    Cheers

so how does Vincent Laforet use ISO 6400 on 'Nocturne' with the 1Dmkll and get no noise in a night shoot with only natural light? That short basically announced that the 1Dmkll had something way more capable than either the 5Dmkll or 7D in terms of low light capabilities.
You used some pretty fast lenses with your 1D and ISO 400 was unacceptable.
    I don't get it.
Your night footage looked great and I expected to see that your ISO was way up there.
    I miss Sydney!!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi PDiddy. Well I don't know how it worked but when I tried using the 1Dmk4 in video mode I was thinking, "This thing is going to eat that night sky and turn night into day. What I got in reality was the impression of ugh!!! this doesn't seem any better than the 5D at night.

Now maybe I'm just a Hack as my mate Rod Thomas said but it just didn't seem that good. If I pushed the ISO to 6400 like Vinnie did the footage would look like it was shot with my iphone. In defense of Mr Laforet maybe he knows what he's doing and I'm truly a Hack!!!

One thing is for sure Canon don't pay me or support me with pre production models and if they did I certainly would feel a little bit obliged to be pro the low light capabilities so as to not burn my bridges with my little mates. Now I stand to be proven wrong with these comments and I'm getting the chance to test both the 5D and 1Dmk4 against each other in a night shoot for an indi film being made here in Western Australia. If I'm totally wrong I will certainly announce myself as a Total "HACK" and never review another camera ever again.

The first footage that hit the world on a pre production DSLR was shot entirely at night or low light and not tested and shown in normal daylight conditions. Now when we all bought the camera, before the firmware update, as soon as you recorded footage during the day the camera overrode your beautiful shallow depth of field footage and turned it into Video.

Now was that deliberately withheld from us so as to not introduce doubt in purchasing the camera? Who knows? It's just as well they fixed the problem with a firmware update or else the 5D mk2 was going to be the biggest disappointment in the eyes of many "Hacks" like me.

I hope I dont get in the poo for telling it how I see it but I'm not in anyones pocket (not because I don't want to be, but who's going to get behind a "Hack" like me). I hope I prove myself wrong on Saturday.

Shivers, I have gone on a bit. I'm pretty sure the night stuff was shot at 400 ISO definitely not 6400. Please!!!!!!

    Thanks for watching pdy.

Please don't send this comment to Canon as I still want to use their cameras as they are still the best in DSLR at the moment for Vid.

    Cheers

Good stuff Michael, love the shots of elephants. I noticed on the panning shot of the skyline in the beginning that the building in the foreground still have that inescapable aliasing on the horizontal lines. I was hoping Canon would address this problem in the 1D.

First half of this video - you nailed it. Really great choice of music and editing. Like the others said, I really can't tell the difference between the 1D and the 5D2 but that isnt much of a surprise. The second half I thought had a lot of nice footage, but the music did match what was on show - Regardless - nice work, the zoo video was great viewing.

  • Nikio 2 years ago
Thank you very much for that. I am at the moment selling my 5DmkII and seriously considering buying 1D mkIV, mostly for photographic reasons. 5DmkII has a very very poor autofocus system and I need something that is far more accurate and reliable.
The video functions are just a bonus for me. I like to play with it, but nothing serious so far. So I was glad to see your video.

Could you please tell me what are the auto-focusing options on 1DmkIV in video mode? How does it work?

And; could you please, just for the sake of an experiment, post some videos on extremely high iso settings (like 6400 or even 12800), perhaps with both cameras.

    Thank you so much !
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
    Hi Nikio.

Yes auto focus on the 5D is a bit poor. The 1Dmk4 has no auto focus in video mode so it's manual all the way.

My brother has been playing around with a Nikon D3s and loves the auto focus and sharpness of the Nikon glass. Take a look at his blog christianfletcher.wordpress.com He has reviewed the D3s and is ready to sell up all our Canon gear for it.

I'll do the video test for you and post it ASAP.

    Mike
  • Andrew Howe plus 2 years ago
Eek, you better hide the 5D then along with the best of the glass! I am not convinced Nikon is as well placed as Canon to exploit the opportunities on the video side.

Very nice, Michael. Can I ask a really dumb newbie question? Where can I find information about the workflow from camera to vimeo? I'm sure there is a motherlode thread somewhere I can't seem to find right now... :)
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hey Daz. If you use Final Cut Studio 7 you have a preset compression action that configures your footage for Vimeo and You Tube beautifully.

    Press the button and bingo.

If your not using FCP get it ESAP.

Failing that Vimeo has tutorials on compression to there format. Go to help in the menu and you will eventually find the info you need.

i finally got my 5d the day after xmas (i never seem to get the great stuff in time for xmas day!)

i have a long road a head of me learning this beast !!

i invested in a canon 70-200 2.8 non IS and it looks great, now i need to figure out what 2 lenses to invest in so i have all bases covered ..

i plan to start with doing some music videos.

at the moment im looking at the canon 24-70 2.8
    or 17-40mm and maybe 50mm

any explination why you use primes and any advice would be great :-)

looking forward to your next masterpiece
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Ant. We use primes as these lenses where used for taking stills initially and they are supposed to be sharper than some of the Canon Zooms.

My favourite lens is the 85mm f/1.2 It's really sharp and fast and looks great for people shots.

Good luck with the 5D mate and send me a link to your next vid creation on the 5D.

Beautiful footage, and thanks a lot for this Mark IV-only cut. Have been considering that camera, principally for motion picture work (including some incorporation of high-resolution stills), so I have some questions, if you don't mind.

Between around 0:45 and 1:15, there are a string of shots where the foreground, almost the lower third of the frame, are quite soft. Not just the foreground water, but even the porous rock at frame right, are very soft, and they're not so close to us. Further, the distant foliage at centre top of frame is pretty soft. Watching it, I wondered if you had done something intentional with a shift lens or something... but I see Joe Simon's note about anti-aliasing. Is that all that is? If it were a compression issue, I could understand it more with the moving water, but I don't understand why even the stationary rock should be so soft. (I'm assuming it's not a DOF issue.) Similar fg and top-of-frame softness in the first forest shots after the water shots. Could you explain what's going on there?

Beautiful shots of the animals. The light on the giraffes is gorgeously soft, almost 'translucent' looking. Were you using any of the camera's "Picture Style" settings there, other than the defaults?

You had a couple of really nice, slow and subtle pushes in here and there, which I thought were zooms... but I didn't notice any zoom lenses on your list. Can you tell us what you had the camera mounted on?

    And...

I'd ruled out all the other Canons because the ability to shoot at 24 or 30 (29.97) fps at full 1080p is important to me, and the APS-C is just way too small. I ruled the 5DMkII out because I recall reading somewhere that it would only do 20fps... but now I can't seem to find any confirmation of its frame rate on Canon's web site. Am I right about the 20fps limit?

    And lastly...

You and a few of your colleagues here mentioned firmware updates for the 5DMkII. Could you explain what those updates might do for that camera's abilities? (If I could get by with the cheaper MkII, which has a bigger chip, well, that would be swell, wouldn't it.)

Thanks again for the upload and your review.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Congratulations Dave. You go down as the longest comment ever:)

In Summary. The softness in the shots you mentioned where due to me using a Tilt Shift lens to get that effect. It is definitely not the camera.

I set the camera on landscape picture style.

The zoom was done in edit with final Cut Pro. Very subtle movements gives the impression a dolly was used.

The 5D currently shoots 30fps at full 1080p HD. The firmware update will reportedly give the 5D additional frame rates of 25p, 50p and 24p. This probably wont come in until they have sold a shit load of 7D's

I'd buy a 5D before all else. It's still the best camera on the market in my eyes.

    Thanks for watching

Another beautiful shoot under "difficult circumstances" (hope you didn't spill your beer with that boat moving around so much). I'm not "good" enough (or maybe not picky enough) to see the imperfections you are looking at, so I don't get your harsh self-criticism. It will be interesting to see if more time with the camera makes a difference in getting the best out of it.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Beer. Beer you say Muzz. Please mate it's champers all the way on this boat.

I cant help but see all the faults in my footage. It eats me up. I just wish it was perfect with no blemishes. A bit like a photoshopped Jen Hawkins.

I thought some of the fireworks shots were spectacular. Reminded me of some scenes in Apocalypse Now. Its really fun to see what can be achieved with these new cameras. Were some of the fireworks in slo motion? Now I have to look back and try to pick out the aliasing.

Nice. I've actually just jumped in with both feet but using the 7D, trading the 25p for the larger sensor on the 5D. Interestingly enough I'm off to Long Island, Bahamas for the final of a film competition so the PNG film was of much interest. Everything I shoot at the moment just looks like garbage and I'm used to shooting on EX1s etc so I though it would be much better, but I suspect practice makes perfect. Your stuff keeps me going when I start to feel I've made a horrible mistake! Bring on the 5D Mk3, surely it will be unstoppable?

We get footage every New Year day on the TV showing how the New Year was brought in around the globe and every year they include the Sydney harbour bridge fireworks, so I've seen it a number of times - I have to say your footage of the fireworks is superb and much more engaging than the tv footage.
The earlier animal shots are beautiful and like a lot of contributers above I wish baby elephants stayed like they are in your video - and you could keep them as pets.

Nice! We recently finally picked up the 5D mkII since it convinced us digital video finally had something worth striving for. What are you using for the super smooth pans and zooms? For instance 00:27 through 00:54?
  •
  • Opus Projects 2 years ago
    Very nice.

    Can I just ask...

For the pans across the buildings, etc. are they hand-held or are you smoothing the movement with some kit? Loving the dreamy feel of them.

The Tilt Shift lens - apologies for my ignorance, but what does it do and how?

Also, on the in-camera resolution, an Editor I know bad-mouthed the 5D for only being H.264 compression despite being 'full HD'. Is this true? Is there a way of bypassing the compressor? If it is H.264 presumably it won't be great when blown up...????

Accept your point about blue sky's selling boat trips, but all looks fabulous to me.

    Cheers
