A free newsfeed app, curated for classroom use, provides daily nonfiction passages with inviting images.

With NewsBug, your young reader/writers can see a daily news story accompanied by one or more captivating images, all curated for elementary students. The app provides short, nonfiction passages with visuals to nurture critical thought, reading, writing, and discussion.

Useful at a station, if you have a 1:1 iPad program, projected as a prompt for writing warmups, NewsBug brings students face-to-face with stories and images to engage their interest and foster the close reading skills essential to the Common Core. With real-life content, NewsBug is also useful for secondary-level English Learners who can access it more readily with the help of visual components.

Rich and Jen survey version 1.0.3; so far, the app is only available for iOS 7. It does not connect with social media, link out to other newsfeeds, or have any in-app purchases or advertisements. Perfect for class!

Our team of credentialed teacher reviewers is playing with apps, and writing them up to give you a complete overview, assessment, pros & cons, and ideas for classroom applications.
