The latter half of the 20th century saw the built environment merged with media space, and architecture taking on new roles related to branding, image and consumerism. Augmented reality may recontextualise the functions of consumerism and architecture, and change in the way in which we operate within it.

A film produced for my final year Masters in Architecture, part of a larger project about the social and architectural consequences of new media and augmented reality.

Thanks very much! Im really interested in how the big ideas in tech and sci-fi affect the mundane and everyday. Minority report is a beautifully designed film, theres an interesting article about its production design here: dir.salon.com/ent/movies/int/2002/07/10/underkoffler_belker/index.html

Great technical show. I would caution that in making an aesthetic film, I would avoid the cluttered look. My eyes didn't know where to look - it felt disorienting. Maybe that's something of what you were going for here.

Many people seem frightened by this idea of the future, but I find it extremely exciting.

The idea of so much information at your fingertips anywhere in the world is tantalizing. It WILL change how we view the world and that is all I can ask in a piece of important technology.

Good job. I can't wait to see this made a reality, even with the downsides of information overload, commercialization run-amok, and whatever other unforeseen social changes come about as a consequence of it.

words can't describe how much i like this, and the tracking work that's been put into it.... big pat on the back for this!
  • Keiichi Matsuda plus 7 months ago
Thanks very much! the tracking took a looong time, in fact the distortion i put on the video was really just to cover up registration errors.. but maybe that enhances the 'realism'!
  • nomand 4 months ago
I thought the distortion of the video was a way to distort 'reality' and rip the line between virtual and real.. especially when milk, cup and the pot get pixelated, it sort of feels like 'ちょっと 待って。。。'
I've been coming back to this video a few times now. awesome!

I agree, Salts, Blade Runner is a good point of reference for this video, mostly because of the attention to detail, and the fact that the future world is every bit as dirty, tacky and glitchy as the real world. Great stereo sound design too.

Keichii, on what screens could one see these brand messages? one would wear special glasses?
  • Keiichi Matsuda plus 7 months ago
I was more interested in the possibilities of the technology than the hardware itself, but yeah, something like glasses or contact lenses. There are many other limiting factors, tracking being a major one, but there are a lot of people working on it!

Sadly it's not hard to imagine a scenario like this becoming a reality (if that's the right choice of word), it's a little depressing to think that branding and marketing will infiltrate our lives so intimately. Corporate brainwashing on a mass scale.

Was your project's aim more to explore the future uses of AR technology, or to look into the social consequences of advertising taken to it's logical conclusion?

In any case it's masterfully executed, well done :)
    Did you use After Effects?
  • Keiichi Matsuda plus 7 months ago
AR is an advertiser's fantasy; its so media friendly, and has potential to make a lot of money for whoever controls the networks. So to answer your question, it was conceived as the former, but contains elements of the latter. The kind of advertising i used is kind of prosaic though, it can be pushed much much further.

    And thanks, and yes :)

Being a graphic designer that loves coding, I'm a huge fan of that technology, but I think we still miss the point when using it (as well as other technologies, like multitouch devices etc...). I'm glad to see someone depicting a "not so bright future" (that's totally subjective) as opposed to this trend trying to use AR to enhance brand recognition and all that marketing crap.
I'm going to follow your work, for sure.

This video will make William Gibson feeling veeery old ... simply brilliant. Looks so lifelike with good attention to the details. Quite fascinating but also terrifying. In some way it makes me really understand how my old mom feels today (jeez, I'm getting old myself ...). And I'm convinced that this will come, the technology is there, it just needs to be put together and be refined.

Only question is: could we really handle this level of permanent information overflow? And what will happen to us and our perception of reality. Again: brilliant vid, good opening to a lot of discussions.
