    First in Pedro! nice ;)
  • Hassan Saddiq 2 years ago
Me too. Very very well done, I love it.

One question though, I noticed considerable jitter at the beginning, is that one of the cons of filming with a HD DSLR or something else? I'm very interested in these cameras because of all the amazing footage I've seen shot on them
  • Nick Bibbo 1 year ago
No that was just a steady-cam malfunction.

Masterfully done, I'm very impressed... and this is with an SLR camera? Wow. I thought you had to have a 10 grand camera to make something like this..

    Mr. Vincent Laforet,

    You are a revolutionary man!
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
Helio - I very much appreciate that - but the reality is that the technology itself is revolutionary. I am just lucky enough to have been at the right place and the right time with the Canon 5D MKII... Reverie was never "meant to be" but instead I saw the potential and did my best to allow others to see it along with me... this contest is about letting others experience that excitement

  • iamkalaniprince plus 1 year ago
This is so great.. I smell a major paradigm shift in the midst..
The quality of the tools available today just blows my mind.. What a beautiful and fantastic collaboration.. I'm definitely adding a piece that will take place on Maui when the time is right.. So cool.. This trend will turn into the next wave of digital filmmakers I'm certain..

    Love and Aloha, iamKP-

Nice work! Your film techniques have really come up a notch, Vincent.

I'm interested to see how all the different contestants will re-create that last shot - it's such a specific location -
    time to get creative...
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
YES - one of the BEST ideas I've hear to give you an idea of where I'm coming from: The trunk could be a small trunk in a fish bowl...pull out... and reveal an entirely differrent world.. i.e. no need for same trunk - same location... our initial interpretation of the still was WAY too literal...had to make sure Canon approved it so we didn't take as many risks as we would have liked to...
  • Matthew Bennett 2 years ago
Great, thanks, it's good to know we have some lattitude as to recreation of final shot...
    Thanks for replying

The audio of the chest being kicked at the end was prefect. For me, it was like, "Oh, sh*t there is someone in there!"

I thought the slow pan around the cab at the beginning was a little too long for me.

But good story telling! Great Job.
  • mike ambs plus 2 years ago
I would just like to say, for the record, that I loved the long dolly in the very beginning. Thought it worked very well and set a very professional tone for the rest of the short. But in any case, yes :) great job indeed.

Great idea... What made you go with the 7D instead of the 5D MK II for this shoot?

To be honest - one of the shots was made with that camera... I had a prototype and truth be told - wanted to make this about making his about the Canon HDDSLR "family" - not just one body...almost academic - the majority of the film was shot w/ the 7D

Nikons are welcome in this contest... as are still images stitched into a movie - or even pinhole cameras... while Canon is gracious enough to sponsor and support it - they are even more magnanimous to allow anyone with any camera enter....

    Finders Keepers. Nice work.

If I may make a suggestion a camera stab pass wouldn't hurt the opening shot or was that a little left over rolling shutter?
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
actually we had issues w/ the steadicam... it wasn't weighted down enough apparently... and we got a very odd and unusual stutter from IT - not the rolling shutter...

it up to you guys, it was left open on purpose!
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
Yes Blake - agreed - nothing to be "pissed" about - unless YOU don't participate... if you don't then in my opinion this entire thing was a waste of time... this wasn't about ME making another one of MY films... it was about YOU taking it to another level that I could never imagine on my own... this may sound a bit trite... but I mean it: please take it to the next level and make us (Canon/Vimeo/myself) feel like we all participated in something BIGGER then our own individual existences...
  • Alain Pilon 2 years ago
I know and understand your goal and I am sure people will come up with great ideas. It is just that I liked so much you our intro that I would have liked to see more of it.

Wow, nice crew you put together to make this happen. Great job.
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
Crew was awesome.. definitely a bit bigger than it needed to be to be honest... reality is: given that Canon was sponsoring the shoot - it became a commercial gig of sorts in terms of scale... we worked with SAG actors, and needed to treat them as the pros they are... and etc etc... you shouldn't need as big of a crew... I was honored to work w/ everyone on my crew - but pls don't be intimidated by the roll at the end... we had a lot of legal things we had to be weary of and couldn't cut around the corners...
  • Anthony Johnson 1 year ago
Hi Vincent.. I was just wondering what happened to your initial idea about how this competition could go .. you said "The trunk could be a small trunk in a fish bowl...pull out... and reveal an entirely differrent world..." what happened to taking this story somewhere creative and new ?
it seems like when this comp is over and you watch the whole film back its gonna be one boring predictive film !
I love the stuff you are doing because you are pushing the envelope .. so far the winners have been people in the industry that seem to churn out this same ol tv stuff that you can watch on any channel ..
excuse my honesty, but i am english .. lol
You may say, why dont I enter if i think I can do better .. but I'm in england so not allowed ..even if i followed your advice and got a friend to enter me, im sure theyd spot the english landscape and stuff ..

I just thought it was time that you stepped in with the judges and took this some where different ala Laforet style :-) .. I have a 5d and started winning competitions with it :-) .. im still a learner, but so was every great DP at one time :-) .. id really like to know what you think about the way the film is going .. thanks.. Anthony.

The opening pan with the steadycam was so smooth I thought you must have used a dolly. Very nice work.
  • Trevor Meeks 2 years ago
I have to disagree. the opening steadicam shot is something my colleague and I both noticed immediately... it looks "bumpy" or something. Compare to Charles Papert's work on "Nocturne" and you'll see what I mean. Vincent, have you had anyone else mention this or did you guys notice the odd look of that steadicam shot during production?
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
Ok so - my first choice Charles Papert was not available on the week we shot "The Cabbie..." Charles is the man... period - in fact he's working with me this week on another project.. He was booked that week and I had to get another experienced operator... BUT - that operator had never worked w/ the HDDSLRs - and to be honest- the firs shots are the worst of the film on a technical level - an INCREDIBLE level of "bump"... why? Because the rig was not balanced/rigged correctly... I had a few crew members who had worked on it prior w/ Papert and I in the past - and I trusted them to make it work... I do remember seeing the "bumps" during the shoot - but it was such a complex shot that I had to do my job as a director to pay attention to the blocking/acting etc - and I incorrectly assumed it was an issue w/ the wireless transmission ... WRONG...turns out it was plain physics/friction - just not good... sorry you picked up on this - but truth be told I CRINGE every time I see the opening sequence.... lesson learned: you can get a fantastic operator - but it pays to invest in someone who has prior knowledge of the gear you worked on... not this operators fault in any way... if this were a TRUE big time budget/production - he and I would have had time to do a tech day / camera test... and we would have nipped this in the bud...
  • Ron Dawson plus 2 years ago
Sure the steadicam work is not perfect, but I trust this level an analness won't be applied to the entries?Especially since most of us won't have the benefit of a full, feature film sized crew like this. :-) Will there be technical "demerrits" for technical deficiencies?
  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
Not from me - and knowing all of the judges personally - I doubt it very much. This is not about making a movie w/ Hollywood polish at all... in fact I'd prefer to see people doing it w/ an office chair or some other contraption to be honest...
  • Chad Knutsen 2 years ago
    word
  • Trevor Meeks 2 years ago
    Vincent,

Thanks SO much for your response. I'm sorry you're frustrated with the shot - I totally understand. Now, to make myself clear, I don't HATE the first shot. Aesthetically it's pleasing - the steadicam work is nicely done. BuMmEr about the setup/balance, but not surprising given the amount of time you had to shoot the project. I certainly don't think people will expect a technically PERFECT film for something like this, especially given production time :)

I just wanted to make sure you knew I wasn't pointing out the technical "crappiness" of the steadicam shot to put down the operator or you - the main reason I asked was because I had a couple of people ask me if I thought the "bouncing" was in some way related to rolling shutter on the 7D or something. Having done the Steadicam workshop up here in Sonoma with Charles, and understanding more about Steadicam work now, I couldn't imagine the bounciness being related to the rolling shutter - just didn't make sense. So in a way I'm pleased to be able to tell people it wasn't that, because I really do believe in these canon HD DSLRs. Can't WAIT for my 1D Mark IV to show up!

Anyway, thanks again, and keep it real bro! You're a huge inspiration to me (and to all of us!)

    -Trevor

yeah, i was thinking while i was watching the opening, that the steadicam shot was a bit intrusive .. as if you were aware that there was a guy walking round with a steadicam lol!
but that was the only thing , and its not a biggie ... i love the above shots etc and pannng ..

im gonna give this comp a go and come from a totally different angle .. hopefully it will fit and continue the perfectness of this opening movie :-)

A LOT of credit should go to Eric Larson our DP. I'll take credit for the framing, blocking, shot selection (along with Eric King and others) BUT - while I did my best to communicate my style/preferences in lighting - Eric deserves all of the credit for the lighting on this gig - he is an exceptional person when it comes to lighting...

  • Vincent Laforet pro 2 years ago
Thanks! Reev: the point is that not all of us can afford a brand new toy for our kids... sometimes it's the though/intent that counts... I hope that carried through in the film ....
  • pau valiente plus 2 years ago
Really good film, it maintain the spectator breath till the end.
I agree with Reev about giving an abandoned toy to a kid without prior clean is something questionable, anyway, cleaning the toy don't fit the "short" movie plot. :-D
