The history of the Bolero can be traced to Spain in the late
18th century, when it resulted from a fusion of the Contradanza
and the Sevillana. The Contradanza is a form of music
and dance of the late 18th century that originated in Europe
and was brought to Cuba. The Sevillana is a flamenco-style dance
from Seville that started as a folk dance.
The Bolero was created in 1780 by a Spanish dancer named
Sebastian Carezo. It is danced in 3/4 time at a rather slow-tempo,
either solo or with a partner, and is often accompanied by music
played on castanets and guitars.
