This is my short 2.5min film I made for a John Woo contest on MySpace. I lost, so here it is.

A delivery man must make his way out a crime lord's safehouse after he catches wind of their plans...

DAMN! If this lost I wanna see what movie won! This was great! Did you make this with all your friends or did you get real actors?
  • Garrett M. Smith 3 months ago
    Thanks!
Yeah, I used my friends and friends of friends to act in the film.

    what camera did you use?
  • Garrett M. Smith 3 months ago
I used the Panasonic HVX200 with its stock lens and Nikon prime lenses via the Letus35 Flip Enhanced adapter.

  • Nice job. Kept me entertained for the whole thing.

nice, how long did it take you?
  • Garrett M. Smith 3 months ago
    Thanks, Chris!

We found about the contest about two and a half weeks beforehand. We had an abbreviated pre-production of about a week, shot in one really long day, and did the editing and effects in 8 days. It good that my vacation was right after that - so I could catch up my sleep. :)

    GREAT job man.

I think its a little to "typical" and "predictable" action movie stuff. I think we've seen those scenes and scenarios in movies before. Maybe a better or more creative twist at the end..?

But I appreciate hard work and I can tell you tried to do something here...good job!

    I agree.

I love the critics. Notice they always have tons to say about things they know nothing about. Please, shoot a 5 second flick that's not predictable and of the "norm". I'll bet it would be great. Not!

I have to admit though, after watching your videos you seem to be very inclined for special effects and such. You're especially in tune to speeding up video and slowing it down. Wow. Keep it coming. And I'm sure we all love the VHS system you must be working with.

That big guy was amazing, well done

    (Where was that filmed?!)
  • Garrett M. Smith 3 months ago
    Thanks Greg!

I filmed at my friends' apartment in Culver City, CA, who were very awesome and helpful throughout the process.

Yes that is awesome! Did you have any budget?
  • Garrett M. Smith 3 months ago
    Thanks, Benje!
Just out of my own pocket... so not much. The biggest expenses were food, prop guns, and breakaway glass.

That was awesome! One question though. John Woo style and no white doves? That's classic John Woo. Anyway, great work!
  • Garrett M. Smith 3 months ago
The dove wrangler couldn't make it that day. ;)

    Thanks for watching Patrick.

Great job!!! how did you manage to not get any noise or grian in the image...my HVX is scary when it comes to grain!!! Almost makes me not want to use it!!! Did you use magic bullet at all?
  • Garrett M. Smith 3 months ago
    Thanks Stuart!
I just lit as much as I could, and other than that, I used Colorista and Final Cut's built-in plugin to color-correct the film. No Magic Bullet Looks though.
  • stuart cohen 2 months ago
Thanks Garrett, Igave it a go and think the noise issue has gone finally. I only managed to light with one halogen light as that was all I had but think it looks okay noise wise. If you go to my profile and take a look at the model showreel you will be able to see the video. Thanks again.

Im a fan. Really nice work, did you use an adapter?
  • Garrett M. Smith 2 months ago
    Thanks Geoff!
Yes, I used the Letus35 Flip adapter with Nikon lenses, except when I really needed the extra boost in light.

WOW! As if you haven't heard it before Garrett, AMAZING VIDEO. I'm really surprised this didn't win. You must have been up against some stiff competition. I have to say, I think this is the best short film I've seen on the internet in as long as I can remember. Everything was well done. What I liked most about it is that it felt like it was 10 minutes instead of 2.5.... in a good way! It seems like it was packed full of so much excitement and kept going and going and going.....
