Bush presses NATO to add Romania to its member list

Anna Chan:
The NATO summit continues in Romania today. U.S. President George W. Bush is continuing to press member countries to add Georgia and Ukraine to the list of member states. Here's more.
Setting the stage for a possible clash at his final NATO summit, U.S. President Bush pressed west European allies to agree to allow former Soviet republics Georgia and Ukraine to join the military alliance.
He also must convince Russia-- which is opposed to both countries joining NATO.
[George W. Bush, U.S. President]:
"So its...you know, I understand Russian concerns about the expansion of NATO. They were concerned when Romania got into NATO, I'm confident. But look what a great partner and a peaceful neighbor Romania is."
France and Germany have said Ukraine and Georgia do not meet NATO's criteria and the decision would be an unnecessary provocation to Moscow. At stake is whether NATO pushes its European borders right up to the frontiers of Russia or mollifies the Kremlin by leaving a strategic buffer-zone.
