11. Ukrainians Speak Out

Anna Chan:
Activists were at the Chinese Embassy in Ukraine shouting the slogan "Ukraine does not keep silent." They lit candles in support of the people of Tibet on the international day of support for Tibet. Here's more from our correspondent in Kyiv.

Burning candles in an appeal to speak up for the Tibetan plight, protestors held slogans such as "Please save Tibet," "My heart is with Tibet," and "Peace to Tibet" at the Chinese Embassy in Ukraine. The organizer of this action, Julia Turechek has been to India twice and had heard stories about the scourge of Tibetans.

[Julia Turecek, Organizer]: female
"Today, seventy cities in twenty-seven countries around the world have come to support the people of Tibet. Last year, the whole world shuddered when they saw things like the shootings at the Chinese border, and then they called it self-defense."

For philosopher Vladislav Zhurby the issue of Tibet is very personal. He practices Buddhism.

[Vladislav Zhurba, Philosopher-Buddhist]: male
"You can hold parallels between Ukraine and Tibet, between the historical fates, it seems to me what Tibet is is now going through is very similar to what we had in the thirtieth year, and it is famine and the destruction of intellectuals during the Stalin regime, all that is known from history textbooks."

Activists have prepared a letter to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Svetlana Laskina attached the text to her back. She asks the Ukrainian government to condemn violence in Tibet.

[Svetlana Laskina, Advertising Manager]: female
"I came specifically to ask the Ukrainian government, on behalf of the people who work with me, that our Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announces its position on, and condemnation of military aggression by the Chinese Communist Party in Tibet."

Participants believe that their voice can make a difference in Tibet.
