Really..a masterclass.
And again great job!
I was trying to use bigger softer sources, so it was a trick to use alot of light, to make it soft, and use ND's to knock it down, to create the look.
The only (minor) thing that I wasn't crazy about was the use of the tilt/shift - but that's just a personal preference and it does make sense to use one in a film relating to an architect.
One technical question - at 1:45, the flashes - were they done in post? I've gotten some pretty heave flash banding when trying to film flashes with the 7D.
Shift-tilt wise, I wanted this to feel like a dream and it just fit the bill. Plus, like you said we're dealing with an architect & architecture. But if it didn't feel right to you, what didn't you like about it?
As for the flashes, yeah, we too had a terrible time getting them. We tried various flash sources, at various camera speed and shutter combinations, and in the end I was able to extract only a few solid frames from a ton of footage. I just strung those together and additive blended them on top of the edit to get the effect you see.
As for the tilt/shift, I felt it was a bit distracting on occasion. For instance the closeup of Wright at 00:53 where half of his face is out of focus. There are also a couple of instances where you have a a pan combined with TS (Taliesin @ 2:08 or bird @ 2:40). With the edges being blurred there isn't much lead room, giving a somewhat closed-in feeling.
Anyway, those are just minor details. It's really a fantastic short film!
great work on getting the flashes to work on the 7D! damn rolling shutter...
