Amazing shots! Did you use a rig for the handheld shots? And what lens(es) did you use?

    And again great job!
  • Brett Pawlak 2 years ago
Thanks Raymond! As Jamieson said previously, we had a Set of Canon Primes, but we also used a 50mm shift/tilt lens for alot of the focus work. And there was no handheld rig for those shots.

Curious, was the tilt/shift used on any of the talent, or was it for primarily the house/station shot. I'm still trying to figure out the practical uses for that lens. Thanks, and I love novels too. We should do a Go Ask Alice spot.
  • jamieson plus 2 years ago
Shift-tilt wasn't used in the straight-on close-ups, that's just Brett being awesome... he could explain better technically how he got those wonderful wide & tight faces. We did use s/t almost everywhere else, though sometimes it's pretty subtle. For something dreamy & impressionistic like this, I think it's a wonderful lens. And Go Ask Alice would be great, but maybe something by Christopher Pike would be better?
  • Brett Pawlak 2 years ago
...for the Close Up portrait shots of the woman, we mainly used a 24mm, and I basically shot as wide open as possible so that our DOP was a narrow as possible. Most of the times they were so close I could'nt use a matte-box, and ended up holding a stack of ND's in front of the lens to stay wide open, even on INT.

I was trying to use bigger softer sources, so it was a trick to use alot of light, to make it soft, and use ND's to knock it down, to create the look.

Fantastic work, really beautiful photography, great camera work and brilliant editing. It's not just one of the best 7D/DSLR shorts I've seen - it's one of the best I've seen here on Vimeo in all categories.

The only (minor) thing that I wasn't crazy about was the use of the tilt/shift - but that's just a personal preference and it does make sense to use one in a film relating to an architect.

One technical question - at 1:45, the flashes - were they done in post? I've gotten some pretty heave flash banding when trying to film flashes with the 7D.
  • jamieson plus 2 years ago
Wow, thank you so much for the awesome review!

Shift-tilt wise, I wanted this to feel like a dream and it just fit the bill. Plus, like you said we're dealing with an architect & architecture. But if it didn't feel right to you, what didn't you like about it?

As for the flashes, yeah, we too had a terrible time getting them. We tried various flash sources, at various camera speed and shutter combinations, and in the end I was able to extract only a few solid frames from a ton of footage. I just strung those together and additive blended them on top of the edit to get the effect you see.
  • Luka plus 2 years ago
The flashes look great so your approach worked well.

As for the tilt/shift, I felt it was a bit distracting on occasion. For instance the closeup of Wright at 00:53 where half of his face is out of focus. There are also a couple of instances where you have a a pan combined with TS (Taliesin @ 2:08 or bird @ 2:40). With the edges being blurred there isn't much lead room, giving a somewhat closed-in feeling.

Anyway, those are just minor details. It's really a fantastic short film!

beautiful shots and very well cut!

great work on getting the flashes to work on the 7D! damn rolling shutter...

Awesome video jamieson. Are anamorphic flares made in post?
  • jamieson plus 1 year ago
Thanks! Brett created the flares in-camera with a homemade streak filter: a plate of glass and some vaseline applied with vertical strokes.
