In the first of two presentations, Ian Price a Clinical Nurse Specialist in pain management introduces how their multidisciplinary chronic pain service, based in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, developed and implemented an Opioid Contract, that can be used for appropriate prescribing and managing patients, on strong opioids, in Primary care, or the pain clinic setting. It was based on the British Pain Society Guidelines: Opioids for Persistent Pain: Good Practice and includes a breakdown of this contract and its implementation.
It presents what needs to be considered when assessing patients for appropriate prescription and the role of a multidisciplinary team and General Practitioners in safe, multimodal management of patients on strong opioids.

Key message:
The success of this management strategy relies on multidisciplinary assessment, informed consent, appropriate documentation and good communication between the patient, the pain service and General Practitioners.
