The HV20 comes with a manual focus roller, which is a good thing. However, it is a bit awkward to operate.

Others here and in HV20.com have come up with clever ways to get around this problem. They usually involve larger wheels that are mounted on some assembly. The wheels are designed to touch the roller and turn it by way of friction.

Here is a minimalist friction tool that can be used to accomplish the same task (well, perhaps with enough practice). It is small, portable, cheap, and light-weight.

Enjoy!

Nice work. Great inexpensive solution. I'll have to give this a try. Looks like the technique needs a bit of practice though.

Nice one.. Might have to give that a try. normally I just run the side of my left index finger up and down there in much the same way. Guess it helps being left handed.

Thanks for the comment guys. It does look like playing a violin/cello doesn't it? I was going to name the tool "Skewdivarius." Hope to get some more practice time with it. Please report how you do with your own focusing stick.

PS: For HV30, use black silicone tubing.

The simplicity makes it so genius!

I swear the things we come up with when faced with restrictions. It is like we all a bunch of jail birds looking for a way out lol.

    Great stuff!

What kind of software drives that thing :)

FeatherTouch(tm) v1.2. Versions before that did not have vertical up&down motion and therefore not compatible. For older users like me, you also need the anti-arthritic plugin.

Cool idea! I just love solutions like that.

At the start I thought you were going slit the tube and wrap it around the edge of the ruler. That way you would have "marks" to hit for your focus pulls.
  • stw254 plus 1 year ago
The yellow ruler you see is a 2' metal one and that would be too cumbersome to lug around. A 12" wood ruler might work, though.

    No way!
I stopped by a thread and saw this. I'm working on a website for a client but I'm going to take a break and go down the street to the hardware store to get the tubing.

    Thanks for the DIY!
  • stw254 plus 1 year ago
Thanks, Scott. Please post your result with the stick.

    LOL, yes.

I did go to the hardware store and get it. Total cost? $0.30. THIRTY CENTS. It's $0.15 per foot, so I got two feet just in case.

It works good. I think I'll rough up the surface a little to give it a little tooth. Otherwise, I'll just have to apply a little more pressure when I run it against the focussing wheel.
  • stw254 plus 1 year ago
Did you get a shiny transparent, hard neoprene tubing or the soft silicone kind?
  •
  • Scott Hampton 1 year ago
kinda shiny...I asked them for silicone and he said "You call it silicone? I call it plastic..." Guess I'd better go to a more equipped hardware store, then. I knew yours looked different!
  • stw254 plus 1 year ago
I am afraid you got plastic and blew your $0.30 :-( The one I use is from model airplane fuel line from hobby stores. Like this one: www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD729&P=ML
Hobby stores should have them, or check with your local automotive store, but do insist on silicone.

The cam gets some small vibrations/movments, even on a tripod.
  • stw254 plus 1 year ago
Thanks for the feedback Jarngras. It does get better with practice, although I have not practiced a lot lately. Can you post your sample video? Did you get silicone tubing (soft, pliable) or the hard neophrene type. Not sure what you have there in Sweden, is it?
  •
  • Dennis 1 year ago
haha that is a great idea. I'm on my way out right now to get some tubing :)

You gotta love the simple things
  • stw254 plus 1 year ago
Thx Dennis. Make sure you get the silicone type.
  • Dennis 1 year ago
Went to the hardware store...didn't have any silicone tubing. So I went to the local hobby store and picked up some silicone tubing fuel line. Works perfect :)

stw254 - Excellent video, I was inspired and went straight out and got myself some silicone tube and made a Focus Stick. I had a practice with it on Sunday outside in the snow and it works just great. More practise is needed.

    Thanks again, scon

Thnx for sharing this, I can;t believe that the company CANON is not thinking of this to make it easy for the pro-consumers

I sent a link of your video to the product development team at Canon. lol You will be getting a phone call asking about this "new technology." Better patent it!

Thx, jborg. Did you really send it to Canon or just jesting :-)
Long ago I decided to share it with the Vimeo community instead of patenting it.

My sense of humor is maybe too dry... It was a joke. I was only imagining their faces looking at the other members of the design team like, "Why the hell didn't we think of that?!"

  • w.pasman 25 days ago
    Nice idea.
The other half of the manual focusing problem is the tiny low res display. Did you do anything to solve that ? (attach larger display?) Were your pictures perfectly sharp anyway? (looks good but for definitve answer the full HD has to be seen)
  • stw254 plus 25 days ago
Thanks, wp. The HV20 has a small sensor and therefore a large Depth of Field. So there is a lot of room for error in focusing and it still looks relatively sharp. It does have a focus assist mode where it magnifies the image to help you focus. True, a larger monitor is nice, but also hard to carry.

I now have a GH1. Focusing is more critical on it. The focus assist is nice; it auto magnifies as soon as you touch the focus ring.
