115 years ago on the morning of May 1, 1898 an American fleet annihilated a Spanish Fleet without a single US combat death. That the victory was so overwhelming and unexpected that it became known as one of the most impressive naval victories in world history. Those American sailors had unknowingly set in motion events that rippled far beyond the strategic objectives of that fleet. Their actions resulted in the end of 300 years of brutal colonial rule of the Philippines, and the emergence of the United States on the world stage as a global power and force for good. At a time long before modern communications news of those events spread like wildfire around the world and the USS OLYMPIA became a household word.
Today, 115 years later USS OLYMPIA, the flagship of that fleet, lies rusting and forgotten[MAYBE THIS IS WHERE YOU SHOW THE DAMAGED OVERHEAD] on the Delaware river. She is in dire need of critical repairs and a permanent home so she may continue to tell her story. Please join with the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation to support our plan to bring the OLYMPIA home and bring history alive on the San Francisco Bay. We intend to ensure that future generations may continue to walk the decks where heroes tread and world history was forever changed. OLYMPIA ranks with the USS MISSOURI of World War II and the USS CONSTITUTION of the war of 1812 fame as one of the most historic ships in United States history. It is up to us to lead the way and maintain this national icon for our kids. Please give what you can and tell a friend. The sailors of that historic Asiatic Squadron thank you.
