Bihar state is one of India’s most populous and impoverished states.
It’s also the epicenter of cases for visceral leishmaniasis or Kala Azar - Black Fever - as it is known locally.
MSF, alongside the local health authorities, has been pioneering ways of delivering quality care for kala azar closer to where patients live, using liposomal amphotericin B.
Training up local staff, such as midwives, lab technicians or nurses, to administer treatment in local clinics - or Primary Health Care centres - ensures much quicker access to treatment and many more lives saved.
