another flashlight animation, this one is brighter because some of my friends were playing wii on the other side of the room. that also explains why the color of the light is always changing.

I feel dumb for asking, but how is this accomplished?
    It's really cool
  • mitch phillips 5 months ago
its a series of pictures played in stop motion, as if it were clay animation. but each picture was taken on a tripod in a dark basement with a long, 10 second exposure. you wave a flashlight around and it kinda "burns" into the image over a period of 10 seconds.

    (not dumb at all)

Thanks! That's more or less how i figured it worked, just wasn't sure.
    Keep up the great vids!

Awesommmme. What camera and software do you use for this? I have a zr800 and use istop motion for my animations, but i don't know if i can do any open shutter stuff with it.
  • mitch phillips 5 months ago
i actually have a zr800 too! but i didnt use it for this. istopmotion is cool, but you can also just use a photo camera and then put all those pictures into something like imovie (i used final cut express, although i've used imovie before and i know that works fine too), set them to like 4 or 6 frames each. that's what i did, and i used a Sony DSC-H9.

You know, I didn't even think of doing that.
Did you have someone shooting for you? or did you use a timer? Or a cable release? Or telekinesis? Tell me your secrets.

there were 2 people. i was flashlight man, standing in front of the camera. then one of my friends was taking the pictures, standing behind the tripod.

The shade of you manipulating the lights adds a lot to the formations themselves.
