Very cool explanation of a fascinating process. His precise explanation reminds me of the scene in American Psycho where Christian Bale explains his morning regimen.
  •
  • Andy S 2 years ago
Very well done and gorgeous to look at. Love how the rich coffee colors pop out from monochrome backgrounds. Also love the obvious respect Kyle has for the process.

One small geek alert: espresso is extracted with 135 pounds pressure per SQUARE INCH. Since the area of a portafilter is over 4 square inches, the pressure on the coffee exceeds 500 lbs....

Thanks for all the great feedback!
  •
  • Kupe Ovics 2 years ago
Haha, thanks for that, Andy. I thought about it after a day or two and realized that I use a good portion of my own weight for my Aeropress, so 135 pounds didn't sound quite right for espresso.

And again, beautiful video. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nice Really Nice I am from Canada and I will go to Venice to visite Intelligentsia. BTW what gear did you use for filming that
  • The D4D plus 2 years ago
Hey Guys - A gear breakdown for those who've been asking: Canon 5D Mk2
    Lenses: Zeiss 50mm, Canon EF 24mm L & Canon EF 24-70mm
Misc: SmallHD mini monitor, Sennheiser mics plugged into a Canon XHA1 for sound (no image used.)

Did you shoot in B&W or did you change it to B&W in post?
    BEAUTIFUL WORK.
  • The D4D plus 2 years ago
Thanks! A bit on the process: Shot in color. B&W in post. Lots of color keying and some roto work to get the coffee to pop. Cheers!

  •
  • Will Spillane plus 2 years ago
    Mega!

i want to try that coffee!

I love the B&W with schindlers list / sin city effect on the coffee. great idea it reiterates what youre trying to communicate.

I'd love to learn how to do that
    Well done.

    Excellent in every way!

Note: I live in Miami, which is now about 80-90% Latin, huge cuban population, and espresso is sold everywhere - from fine restaurants to gas stations... So, after a while you become at least a little knowledgeable. That said, I have NEVER seen anyone show so much respect for their espresso. If a restaurant offered that respect here, well, it would be astonishing.

  • BenTs 2 years ago
The video is really great! Great images, good edit, but.. the explanation is crazy, since its missed the most important thing about espresso. The coffee beans used to make it, that's what gives the taste to it. The process itself only serves to make it foamy, and even so he does it like an amateur. he spills grained coffee all over and uses is fingers to remove the excess. Just one last observation; Espresso was invented in Italy, it means fast or express. Years later it spread fame to Portugal and Brazil. Spain or Cuba have no espresso tradition.

Ye expats of little faith: There's still hope: so there actually are alternatives to watery moccafrappovanilla coffeefantasy Starbucks franchises???

Kidding aside: I love the subject, being a total espresso junkie and I love the way it was shot and cut, with the isolated coffeecolor as a bonus.
Did that come out of Color or AE?

Also: great title font! Looked like it was on plate glass storefront (duh)

"A bit on the process: Shot in color. B&W in post. Lots of color keying and some roto work to get the coffee to pop. Cheers!"

Ok, now I gotta ask details. How much color keying did you do? e.g. 10 different shades of brown/red. And I'm just curious how you did your roto work. I know there are plenty of options today; I'm just wondering which one you used.

I'm always blown away at what the 5D and 7D's can produce, but this just takes me to another level. Even the isolated color was flawless. Great job on all the vids!

This video is so great. I love the contrast of the colored products as it pops out in a canvas of B&W...just brilliant. It makes the video classy and hip. It also just made me get up, get dressed and head over to my local independent coffee house to buy a latte. Good job.
