The last days of the Motorcycle Speedway track at Exeter in Devon, England. This track had been one of the first to be built and was also the longest and the fastest in England. It was such a cool place, racing pros came there to watch racing over and above other tracks. Built before modern concerns for health and safety, all that separated spectators from the start line was 2mm metal sheeting and some grille mesh. There are many parallels with bullfights....see the riders stomp the ground flat at the start so their tyres get more grip......and chariot racing too like in Ben Hur. It's dangerous machismo stuff. See the spectators flinch with the noise and the flying grit that hits them. Filmed right at the end of its life see the fabulous old ground equipment ....the tractor....the grit sprayer.....the start line painter. It's fabulously atmospheric . But most important if you want to get the real raggedy vibe of the place ......PLAY IT UNBEARABLY LOUD! NO THAT AINT LOUD ENOUGH!
