Forty minutes west of Philadelphia, Longwood Gardens was established by Pierre S. duPont (1870-1954), an industrialist, conservationist, farmer, designer, impresario, and philanthropist. He was the great-grandson of the founder of the Dupont chemical company.
Longwood is one of the world’s premier horticultural centers. We live one mile from there and, with season passes, visit often. Each visit brings new discoveries and pleasures. Those are bald cypress "knees" under the tree on the "island" in the lake--the knees are projections of roots out of the water/marsh. The tree covered in white blossoms is a magnolia variety.
