I've been inspired recently by a number of time lapse video's I've seen here on Vimeo, so I thought I'd try my hand at it.
I still have a lot of experimenting to do! However, in the hopes of helping others who would like to do this with their GH3's, I have included many of my shooting settings in the video to help you get a jump start.
For future experiments, I'm going to try upping the ISO setting a bit. I can see now that going down to an ISO of 125 was not only unnecessary, but actually hindered my results. This should dramatically improve the amount of light registered on the sensor with this lens.
I'm also going to get started before 10pm as it gets plenty dark by 8pm at this time of year. These changes should allow me to use shorter exposures (for same brightness) and higher pics per hour, and get in more hours of exposures for more movement.
I also need to tweek the focus a bit. I could see in post that it still wasn't set quite right.
I also have a 50mm f/1.4, but I don't want to cut my FOV to a quarter of what I have now.
Even with the 20 second exposure, there was some noise. I found that Neat Video's noise reduction worked well without eliminating the stars even though the "quality" was only 33%. It was difficult to get a good sample because there were so many stars in the FOV. :) I found there were a couple tiny areas on the top and in the corners I could get a bare minimum sample from.
This is not a "how to". There are many videos here that can give you the information you need to duplicate what I've done (and better!). Unfortunately, I still haven't found an "all-in-one" video that has all of the pieces necessary for nighttime time lapse photography.
Any suggestions for improvement would be appreciated!
