A young girl is found blind and dying from AIDS on the beach at Coney Island. During her recovery, she is befriended by a writer who has been asked by the Girl's doctor to try and find out what he can from her about where she is from and what her name is. He has been experiencing writer's block and hopes the girl's story may help unblock him. The girl shares her story with him and in the process they become emotionally attached to each other: but even though she shares with him the story of her seduction by a neighborhood boy and her descent into drugs and prostitution, she won't tell him where she is from or her real name. When he overstays a week with friends in the Hamptons, Children's Services comes to take her away. Told that there is no way the Writer can become her guardian, she begs for them to give him one more night to return from his vacation. When he finally does return a few days later and discovers what has happened to the Girl, he is devastated and left to ponder his betrayal, along with so many others, of her trust.
