As a result of the renewed rains the roads have reached a point of marshiness that is unknown in Central Europe . Even panje wagons, which are widely used, are getting stuck on the most traveled roads. It sometimes happens that a horse sinks up to it's neck in the mud and must be shot. On the advance route stand numerous trucks, some of which sit up to the body in the swamp so that they can no longer be pulled out by tractors/tanks. On the roads only heavy tractors get through; the feared result or the overburdened supply traffic will be heavy fallouts. The curduroy roads, which are built over long distances, are after a short time already covered with 30-40cm of watery mud that squeezes through the gaps between the logs. - War Diary of Vietinghoff's panzer corps 26th October.
