Wall of Sound is a student project of the Stuttgart Media University (HdM) in Germany. It’s a touchscreen music sequencer application which lets the user create music by placing sample objects onto the canvas. By looping or modifiying the sound objects with special effect objects the player can create his individual score out of the included sample library. Our aim was that there’s no musical knowledge required to build a more or less hearable piece.

Technically, the setup consists of a DirectX application that handles the user interface and which sends MIDI data to a Pure Data patch that is responsible for everything concerning sound and timing. The GUI application uses a self-written multitouch library written by Steffen Abel as his diploma thesis.
