All shot from my room in the Atlantis Hotel in Dubai.

Different timelapse shots to test the best way to capture day to night and vice versa.

First sequence and penultimate sequence done with Panasonic GF1, the rest with the Canon 5DmkII and Canon 7D.

To be used in Documentary on Dubai Royal Family for Media Prima and Talkabout Media.

Wow, the cranes up on the skyscraper's roofs are amazing ... like an organism.

Phil, it was great you included the GF1 in this timelapse...that looks like a versatile and powerful little camera.

Do you think you had any troubles with flicker in these timelapses? Couldn't notice in the web version!

This is the first Philip Bloom Video I didn't like at all.
What a horrible, soulless city Dubai seems to be...

But great resource for learning about time-lapse photography together with the blogpost.
  • Ali Imran Zaidi plus 2 years ago
It was just taken from one location unlike most other of Philip's work. Don't judge the city so quickly, it's just a different approach Philip took here. No people shots like we're used to- which presumably would be the missing 'soul.'
  • Danny Cooke plus 2 years ago
I agree, they are test shots from one location so making it special is hard work. (It does what is said on the tin) I think he did a good job. I find the cranes very interesting...shows you how much growth that city goes through.
  • Michael Schoeneis 2 years ago
Philip made that Seattle time-laps test as well, which I found alright.
Never mind me though. Maybe it's just that time of the month for me ;)

Seattle? Eh? Never been there! Love to go though! Rains a lot doesn't it?!

Funny how the distortion in the soundtrack adds to the 'arab' feel of this video. I think it's great. Was it a deliberate choice?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
distortion was a mistake that is now fixed. The Arab feel of music was of course deliberate though

Have you done some post grading on that? Some of the sky's look vignetted, but that could just be light pollution.

timelapse keyframing is becoming tedious and cheap-looking IMO, esp when used on every shot...u really don't need to do it phil!! stick to what ur best at :)
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
i like it so will continue to do it. Better than static.
  • FX Films pro 2 years ago
but you said the other day you hated it when people use motion unnecessarily! and keyframing timelapses is fake motion! ;)
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
rules are there to be broken!
  • FX Films pro 2 years ago
    this is true ;)
p.s. i used to keyframe alot of timelapses too, but the truth is i get fed up with my own stuff v.v.quickly

keep up the stellar work mr.bloom!!

    phil,
that sapphire deflicker filter worked great.

    one question tho...
if you are using all three cameras to capture time lapses what camera are you using to shoot the dubai royal family?

or are you in dubai for an extended period?

great stuff dude, love the shot changes with the music. subtle.

    Dear Philip,

When I watched your Skywalker Ranch video, I thought, wow, it's so sharp, like digital, yet warm, like 35 millimeter film.

Now, one of the things I dislike about digital video is how cold and austere it can be. So I was pleased to read this from your Web site AFTER I watched the Skywalker film:

Over the past 3 years I have embraced the 35mm film adaptor market, shooting on HD video but making it look close to 35mm film.

Please don't lose sight of that thinking, Philip. It's what makes your work so special!

    Thanks.
