In feminist discourses the roles and perspectives of men is mostly neglected. This film is a polyphonic portrait of a man, who works for a women's rights organization in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Umapathi informs destitute women about their rights and helps them to claim these. In the private domain, however, he represents a rather patriarchal point of view. The characterization of Umapathi is completed by comments of his wife, his boss and his friend. The film records a fragmented image of women (penn), femininity (penmai) and feminism (penniyam). Moreover, the film is a self-reflexive documentation of my ethnographic fieldwork in Madurai.
