Knee Deep is an interactive installation that invites children to jump in and explore unexpected worlds of different proportions with their feet. Stomping through a loose narrative that plays with ideas of scale, point of view and discovery of cause and effect, children gain a sense of perspective about how their actions relate to the natural systems of our world. Knee Deep allows children to see themselves and the world from seemingly impossible scales and provides a space for exploration and play where children can create their own rules and logic.

The installation combines real-time greenscreening, computer vision and stomp detection. Knee Deep was made with openFrameworks.

so sweet :) I particularly love the leaves sticking the legs and falling off... nice work !!

That is my favorite part. Are you doing contour point tracking?
  • Theo Watson plus 2 years ago
Yeah! - every point on the contour has an id, normal and velocity. So that way if the point moves too fast we make the leaves fall off.

the idea is that existing points are matched against an idealized/even distribution from the current contour. any that don't match are dropped and replaced with new ones to fill the holes. it works surprisingly well :)

I should upload some debug screen shots.

Considering how much our 8 month old loves seeing herself on screen, she would go bananas for this. I'm all for computer aided pretend! Lovely.

Oh wow - thats your kid congrats - what a cutie!
Hopefully we'll get to do a version state side soon.

In the meantime there is always our Funky Forest installation at the children's cafe - Moomah in NYC.

    wicked!
had to watch it twice to catch all the bits of detail.

haven't seen too much green screen openCV before this... does it make a huge difference with contour detection compared to a white screen?

well for tracking it helped a lot - as shoes and other parts of clothing are more likely to be white than a very intense saturated green

Really great stuff! Did you use a force sensor or vibrations sensor or dont tell me you actually analyzed sounds?
  • Theo Watson plus 1 year ago
It was a homebuilt contact mic - ( piezo element attached to the bottom of the platform )

Gave really nice spikes when the kids stomped :)
