In the aviation world, Desiree Horton is a force to be reckoned with. She is the first and only female pilot to fly for a fire department in Southern California. Horton is Calfire's newest pilot. She says, "I just try to think of myself as one of the boys but as a girl in this business, you do standout. It's fun!"

During the recent Glendora fire, Horton was out there fighting the flames. She spent the day making one drop after another--saving home after home. Horton flies a crew of 7 california inmates. They make sure all the firefighting equipment is working properly before take off. Then, Horton takes her crew to the fire. The guys do structure protection while she makes water drops. "That's what the helicopters do. They support the ground crews, they help put the fire out so they can continue to make that line around the fire," says Horton.

It's taken Desiree 23 years to make it to the level she's at now. She hopes to serve as an example to other women that anything is possible as long as you are willing to give it all you've got.
