Timpanists are commonly required to tune in the middle of a piece of music. They obtain a reference pitch from a note played by another instrument in the course of the performance and then use musical intervals to arrive at the desired note. In this video, a timpanist is performing a written symphony. No orchestra is visible nor audible on the scene. The context, thus the melody, is absent. The orchestra is playing merely in the timpanist’s head and she is playing her written role in the piece, fragments of pulses. The timpanist becomes the whole for the viewer, playing the absence of the melody. She becomes soloist.
