Three years ago Shawn McIntyre packed up everything he had--and left everything in Philadelphia behind--and moved to New York City. On March 3, 2011, a China bus dropped him off on Bloom and Allen. He didn't no anyone. He didn't have anything except the clothes on his back and a few bags. But for the first time, he said he felt free.

McIntyre is a part of a large population of displaced LGBT homeless youth.

In the United States 40 percent of homeless youth identify as either lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. In New York City, there are approximately 5,000 LGBTQ youth on the street every night. Places like New Alternatives in the West Village provide refuge for many of the city's homeless LGBT population, and for people like McIntyre.

Since moving to New York, McIntyre has been focused on becoming independent, getting his own place and finding a job.
