Brother Jeff has become somewhat of a legend in his beloved neighborhood of Five Points in northeast Denver. Once a successful hip hop music promoter, Brother Jeff was struck by a pattern he started observing in African-American neighborhoods throughout the country: first jobs went away; then came drugs; then violence and death, and eventually the prison industrial complex. When the pattern started becoming apparent in Five Points, Brother Jeff decided to act. He dropped his music career and re-purposed his skills towards community organizing. In the span of two decades, he has managed to gather very diverse segments of Denver’s society together to create many artistic, cultural and educational projects which work to counter the influence of drugs and violence. His incredible success stands as a model of positive, multi-ethnic community organizing.
