Sounder | Smiler was made as an impressionistic response to auditory impact on the senses. Using tableaux that are meditative and cursory, personal and experiential images associated with transport infrastructure and water were juxtaposed with auditory interpretations of environmental resonances within structures and motifs referencing the Eschede train disaster as well as excerpts from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual regarding Narcissistic Personality Disorder. When considering this film beyond it's brief, themes of mass human habitation combined with the impossibility of individual presence are evinced. That the maker of noise, the sounder, may also be a term for wild pigs is both apt and pleasing.
