All shot with Letus 35 Extreme and a Sony V1U. Nikon 35-70 lens used. First attempt using LEX! The music is from Tim Story "Her Cathedral". I added a vignette with darker and blurry corners to some shots in post. I hope to get out and shoot another one soon. Video production is what I do, but mostly for clients, so shooting this type of thing for "fun" is not something I can do too often.

Nice colors and DOF use. The 35-70 performs better then I expected, nice soft tones.

Thanks, yeah, that has become my favorite lens, it's a Nikon 35-70 f2.8 D lens. The D's are quite sharp. I've just made a much better encode and swapped it out. Check it out again if you get a chance!

Fantastic. And yes, even better with the latest version.

Looks much better with the latest re-encode. I don't think the original one had a HD option. Nice work.

I love the feel of the video. Evocative. Reminds me of Rosetti's "In the Bleak Mid-Winter."

    I also shoot with a V1. I plan to buy a 35mm adapter . . . just struggling with which one.

  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
Daniel, The Letus Extreme mounted fine to the V1 with the correct step ring. It eats up a little more light, but I understand not as much as some of the others. As you know, the V1 is no low light champ, so that was important to me. I did not try any others so I can't comment on them, the LEX is pretty sweet though!

    Matteo,

It is a Sony V1u. HDV 24p camcorder. Came out about a year and a half ago.

A work of art. Your film is a great inspiration. I'm completely new to video altogether so let's see what I can do with with my little Xacti HD1000 ;-)

Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff. Really nice music, as well.

Favorite shot was the leaf in the snow at 3:30 with the sunset behind it. Bravo.

Wow. I almost cried, it made me miss Wyoming so much. I have been living in Alabama for five years now, but I still have dreams of being in that surreal week-old snow with the dry grass and sage growing through it.

    Damn.

  • wow ! looks really great. how did you manage to get a 5-minute video to such a small file size !?
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
I just opened the HDV master file, then using Quicktime Pro, compressed to the settings Vimeo recommends. Maybe it's smaller because of starting with an HDV Master, not a bigger file? I always edit HDV native.
  • Oh, so you compress the raw footage before doing any editing?
  • 01VideoLab 1 year ago
Native HDV IS compressed. With mpeg2.

Great images & music, glad to have that weather behind us.... where did you shoot this?
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
    Chuck,

All shot in Upstate New York! Way up near the Canadian border! It's finally warming up here, glad to have spring back!

Absolutely beautiful. Closer to photography than video. I'm a stills photographer myself and feeling quite inspired by seeing this. How did you do the moving camera shots so smoothly?
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
Those camera moves are simple pans on a tripod, they look like dolly moves due to shooting in macro!
  • John Arnold 2 years ago
Aha - a sneaky film-maker's trick. I should learn a few of those. Thanks.
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
    John,

Using the Letus and Nikon lenses sure does make this more like photography, or more like shooting using a real film camera. It makes a huge difference in the look.

    Thanks!
  • John Arnold 2 years ago
I had no idea alternative lenses were available. I guess I assumed that was something only available to the really high end video cameras. Would these lenses fit my Canon HG10? I think I saw someone mention the HV30 and as far as I can see those two cameras are quite similar in cost and capability.
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
    letusdirect.com/cart/Letus35-Mini-p-21.html

This would probably be the adaptor you need. Not sure if it'll fit your exact camera though. You then specify which lenses you plan to use and get that mount for the front of the Letus mini.
  • John Arnold 2 years ago
Oh yeah - 43mm ring. That would fit the HG10. But look at the price! Damnit, you're giving me gear lust. I'd better not let my wife see me looking at that page.

Thanks for the tips. When I have some spare cash I might invest.

nice, makes me look at my V1U with a new appreciation. How did you capture the video - HDV or some other intermediate codec?
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
All done with native HDV in FCP 6.

This video is over the top. Well done. It's a great example of what can be done these days with relatively little money. This is the type of video that inspires me to pick up my camera. Thank you.

I just ordered the letus ext and have been getting confused on all the lens choices. obviously the 35-70 zoom worked great. any black edges? can you zoom manually while filming? Also you mention maco? What are your settings? I am using for cine style weddings.
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
I use my 35-70mm F2.8 D Lens almost exclusively. You can NOT zoom while recording, it just helps you change your framing between shots much easier than swapping lenses. With all these lenses you have to zoom your camera in to fill the frame, mine is at zoom 64. Some of the EX1's you need to zoom in even more. My Nikon 35-70mm has a macro function on it, so you just stay at the wide end, then push a button on it and rotate to enter macro focusing. I recently saw this lens go for around $350 on E-bay. I have a 24mm, that is good but the wider you go the softer they get on the corners. It will be tricky to do run and gun type shoting wioth the LEX. It's bulky and heavy and you need rails, etc.

But the shots are incomparable! You'll love the footage you get, it just is tougher to get it.
  •
  • john McCarthy 2 years ago
My Letus is on the way, and I purchased the rail system, and follow focus.
I want it for detail shots, and for effect. I have mamiya med format lenes
that I want to try as they have great glass. One is a 110mm 2.8, 80mm 2.8
and 150 4, I am purchasing the mamiya to nikon adapter. I am a pro
photographer first, and love shallow depth of fields. I have been shooting
my fx1s in manual with, with manual shutter and iris, but still not as good
as I want. Also I noticed your rendered films look razor sharp on line
too. I have not been able to get mine to look that good online. I am using
premier cs3, I import HDV and export dv avi,, unless I burn a blue ray.
What has been best for you? I also want to thank you for taking time to
chat about this stuff, I am sure you have plenty to keep you busy.

    CHeers
    John
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
I'd say don't export to DV AVI and then make your web file from that. You want to make the web file right from your HD master file. I use FCP and Quicktime. Once I have an HDV master, I open quicktime pro and export using the settings Vimeo recommends, thats it! Pretty easy. I have also used Compressor to make the web file but Quicktime Pro seems to work as well. I'm not sure how it would work in Premiere.

Hi John, I m also looking at the LEX n I'm using a FX1 too. Would be grateful to see yr post here once u get some footage :) To load on Vimeo, I would suggest 720p WMV-HD but u need to tweet the frame rate to what Viemo accepts. I think it works for 30p if I'm not wrong.

  • Italo Valerio 2 years ago
I liked very much the smooth movements, great job. What tripod you used?.
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
My tripod is a bogen 3246, with a Bogen 3066 head. The cool thing with the V1 and Letus set up is it's now quite heavy and thus camera moves are much smoother! It's tough to make smooth moves on a tripod with a small, light video camera. You need extra weight to give it some inertia.
  •
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 2 years ago
Lovely visuals. I had no idea you could attach a letus to a V1U. I think I'll get one for mine! Do you need a special attachment for the extra weight on the front?

Oh, and did you do a reverse telecine on this? Or do you edit in 29.97?
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
I ended up getting the Zacuto rod system. It is a lot of extra weight on the front. YOu need a step ring for the V1 to mount properly. I shot this in 30p, so no reverse telecine needed.
  • Jon Rawlinson plus 2 years ago
Thanks so much! Do you have any photos of your setup? Any chance you can tell me the total cost of the Zacuto, step ring and Letus extreme? I appreciate it!

Looking forward to your next video.
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
It's pricey! But worth it, for one, you don't have to wait as long to get a Letus thru them, they have some in stock. The Letus is $1200, the step ring $35 the rods and Z-riser is $940. I also bought an expensive Matte box that I thought I needed but really don't. (though it looks cool!) I don't have pictures yet, I'll see if I can take some.

I have been watching so many videos here at Vimeo, but this one is still the one that I like the most.
I downloaded it, and have watched it at least a dozen times.

I am sure that many people, including myself of course, consider getting a Letus35 adopter after watching this beautiful video.

There are two stuffs that I have come to know here at Vimeo.
One is therefore the Letus35 adopter, and the other is "Magic Bullet Looks".

Almost all the videos that I find beautiful here at Vimeo are shot using Letus35 adopter and edited using "Magic Bullet Looks", but you don't mention "Magic Bullet Looks" here, so you did not use it for this video?

If so, it is good to know that one can make such a beautiful video image as this one without "Magic Bullet Looks", because I am really broke now after buying a very expensive Letus35 adopter.
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
Thanks Makoto! WOW, that is some high praise for my work. I'm so pleased you enjoy the video. No, I do not have Magic Bullet looks. This is all pretty much straight out of the camera, but I have tweeked the camera settings to get the look I like. The Letus tends to "warm up" some of the colors just by adding it too. My other video called "After the Thaw" has more Color correction applied, but mostly just boosting the colors a bit. Even that CC was done in FCP using just their 3 way color corrector.

Good luck with your Letus! Let me know when you have something posted that you have shot with it.

As I repeat watching this video so many times, I ended up loving the music too, and guess what, I just bought the CD "Beguiled" of Tim Story, which includes this "Her Cathedral".

I had never heard of this music or even of the artist named Tim Story before.
This video made me love the music so much that I had to buy the CD.

Actually, this is not the first time that I end up buying the CD of the music used in videos here at Vimeo.
I guess not all are used "legally", but they do good publicity in fact.
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
Awesome Makoto! That is great news. I was moved by his music and it appears you have been too! Thanks for supporting Tim Story and his music.

Hello! I love your work, greetings from Lima Peru.
I have a question, hopefully you can answer. I also have a HVR V1 and the truth that when placed in the pan 24p I get clumsy. Why is that? Edited with Premiere. thanks! (Sorry, I do not speak English)
