UPPERCASE Surface Pattern Design Guide

Our Spring issue has a very special feature: the UPPERCASE Surface Pattern Design Guide.

I’m really excited about the Guide! Not only is it full of inspiring and beautiful designs, some amazing industry experts have provided their expert advice and top ten tips for succeeding in a challenging market.

We have articles about SURTEX, the biggest industry trade show— and often the ultimate goal for up-and-coming surface designers—as well as advice from illustration rep extraordinaire Lilla Rogers. Designer on the rise, Elizabeth Olwen shares her experience of exhibiting at SURTEX for the first time last year.

We also have tips from Emma Mawston, the design director of Liberty Fabrics, as well as Cloud 9 Fabrics and the great blog Sew Mama Sew. The co-founder of Spoonflower takes us behind the scenes of print on demand textiles. Marie Perkins, author of the Print & Pattern book series and blog offers her tips on becoming educated as a surface designer and an editor from the teNeues Publishing makes recommendations on how to make a good impression with editors and art directors. My heroine Lotta Jansdotter share her tips on how to live a life full of pattern.

The biggest part of the guide are profiles of 100 designers from around the world. These participants were selected from nearly 300 entrants. After reviewing literally thousands of surface pattern designs from these submissions, I’ve come up with my top ten tips for how to stand out in a crowd which I will share with you in this video.
