We spent two days in Sangli, Maharashtra with SANGRAM an NGO focused on human rights and HIV. Executive Director, Meena Seshu, showed these short films at the World Aids Conference in 2010. We took the couple outside their village to hear their story out of fear their neighbors would question our presence or listen in. They moved us all to tears. Durga welcomed us into her community and showed us how they work together to protect each other and fight for what they deserve. And Pandu gathered his community to help reenact his story complete with sari changes and characters. These films are some of our favorites because the stories are honest and real and push us to question the pervasiveness of discrimination in our society and how it directly affects our health and well-being.
