Kanesa and Thor tied the knot on New Year's Eve 2009 on the beautiful island of Kauaʻi. Kristina and I (lea•kai photography) were honored to participate in the event and had a great time with the newlyweds and their families.

Maui Jim sponsored the wedding by providing sunglasses for the bridal party. Kanesa was nice enough to include the photographers - we love our Maui Jims!

The rain and challenging lighting conditions gave our Nikon gear a good work out. Thank you Nikon for making weather resistant cameras! Several people came up to me during the reception to comment on how calm we looked while continuing to shoot during the downpour, but they didn't see me freak out when I ran out of room on my CF cards in the middle of the ceremony. Swapping CF cards in the rain is not something I want to do again any time soon... Time to invest in foul weather gear for the cameras.

Kristina was on a D700 with a 24-70mm f/2.8, and I was on a D3 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 (swapping to a 24-70mm f/2.8 or a 14-24mm f/2.8 for a few shots).

The pavilion where the reception took place had a really high ceiling, and only one wall in the back to bounce a flash off of. Most of the house lights were turned off, so the venue was mostly lit by candle light and some video lights against the rear wall. Tough lighting conditions, to say the least!

Nikon SB-900s were mounted to each of our cameras, but we rarely used direct flash. Most of our shots employed bounced flash, and I set up a pair of older SB-24's with PocketWizards to light up the back wall, providing some additional, directional light.

The professional Nikon bodies (D700 & D3) have PC sync ports - no, not the USB port - that can trigger an off-camera flash simultaneously with an on-board, hot-shoe mounted flash. So, I had the D3 set up with an SB-900 on top and a PocketWizard tethered to the PC port. The PocketWizard on the D3 triggered the two SB-24's in the back of the pavilion.

We hope Kanesa and Thor enjoy this little video montage of the event. Congratulations to the newlyweds!
