A video project exploring notions of beauty and community with Milwaukee middle school students

In conjunction with the exhibition, Miguel Rio Branco: Beauty, the Beast, the Haggerty Museum of Art-Marquette University will presented Seeking Beauty, a video project combining filmed interviews of middle school children and their art teachers with images of student artwork and the diverse communities in which the students live.

The sumptuous color of Miguel Rio Branco's images reflects the richness and complexity of contemporary Latin America. Through Branco's mastery of light and color, the harsh realities of life are seen as simultaneously disturbing and beautiful. The artist's work was used as a springboard for students from MPS and suburban schools to reflect on their lives and concerns. Local filmmaker Laj Waghray interviewed the students and asked them to talk about their sense of community and notions of beauty. Images of artwork made by the students are integrated with the filmed interviews and other video footage creating a documentary-style video. Students from Marquette's broadcast and electronic communication department assisted Waghray in the production and editing of the video.

Participating schools in this project include; Malcolm X Academy, Hartford University School, United Community Center Alternative Middle School, Craig Montessori School, Whitefish Bay Middle School and University School of Milwaukee.
